Research and Publications

[edit]

Dr. Mourad’s research encompasses advanced surgical techniques in head and neck oncology, reconstructive surgery, and facial plastic surgery. His contributions include a significant number of peer-reviewed articles, chapters in medical textbooks, and a widely used textbook in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Textbook: Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Concepts, Questions, Answers

[edit]

In 2019, Mourad co-authored Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Concepts, Questions, Answers with Dr. Samer Moubayed and Dr. Anthony R. March. Published by Jaypee Brothers, this textbook provides a comprehensive overview of core topics in facial plastic surgery and serves as a study guide for board certification candidates. It combines fundamental knowledge, complex case studies, and assessment questions, making it a valuable resource for both training and advanced surgeons.

Key Research Areas

[edit]

Dr. Mourad has authored over 40 articles and book chapters across the following key areas:

  • Oncologic Surgery and Reconstruction: His work on surgical management of advanced head and neck cancers, including carotid artery sacrifice and reconstruction, has guided surgical protocols for treating aggressive malignancies. His research emphasizes strategies for improving both functional and survival outcomes in oncology patients.
  • Innovations in Laryngeal Surgery: Mourad's publications on conservation laryngeal surgery provide insights into preserving patient function while effectively treating laryngeal cancer. His research highlights techniques to enhance oncologic outcomes and minimize adverse effects on speech and swallowing.
  • Facial Nerve Reanimation Techniques: Recognizing the functional and aesthetic challenges of facial paralysis, Mourad has contributed to advancements in facial nerve repair using techniques such as masseteric nerve grafting. His research in this area has been instrumental in developing new reconstructive approaches for facial nerve deficits.
  • Microvascular Free Flap Techniques: Mourad's research on microvascular reconstruction for head and neck cancer patients has led to improvements in flap design and surgical planning, particularly in cases involving complex facial defects. His work on supraclavicular and bilobed flaps has enhanced both aesthetic and functional outcomes in reconstructive surgeries.
  • Venous Thromboembolism in Otolaryngology: Mourad co-authored a systematic review and meta-analysis addressing the prevention and management of venous thromboembolism in otolaryngologic surgery. His work provides evidence-based recommendations to minimize complications, especially in patients undergoing extensive head and neck procedures.
