The Monument to Senator Pinheiro Machado is a public monument located in the Nossa Senhora da Paz Square, in the neighborhood of Ipanema, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was erected in honor of José Gomes Pinheiro Machado (Cruz Alta, May 8, 1851 – Rio de Janeiro, September 8, 1915), a republican apostle and politician of the Old Republic, who played a significant role in consolidating the republican regime in Brazil.
Background
[edit]The monument's construction was initiated by a bill presented to the Chamber of Deputies by Deputy Francisco Valadares. The winning design of the competition, overseen by the Ministry of Justice, was by sculptor Hildegardo Leão Veloso, born in the district of Palmeiras, municipality of Suzano, São Paulo, in 1899, a disciple of Rodolfo Bernardelli in sculpture and modeling.[citation needed]
The monument was inaugurated in 1931 and is set on a base made of stone and cement, with four steps leading up to the pedestal. It features granite and stone columns five meters high. The life-size bronze statue of Pinheiro Machado faces Visconde de Pirajá Street. On the sides of the monument, two life-size female figures represent "Glory" and "Apotheosis".[1] According to art critic Anna Teresa Fabris, the monument does not adhere strictly to traditional artistic canons, nor does it follow a completely modern conception.[2]
On May 8, 1951, the centenary of Pinheiro Machado's birth, a civic ceremony was held at the monument. The event was organized by the Commission of Organizers of the Festivities, which included Minister Augusto Tavares de Lyra, Senators Landulfo Alves, Alfredo da Silva Neves, and Joaquim Pires Ferreira, Deputies José Antônio Flores da Cunha and Daniel de Carvalho, historian Cyro Silva, journalist Hebert Moses (President of the Brazilian Press Association - ABI), Guilherme Melecchi (President of the Sociedade Sul-Riograndense), and doctors José de Oliveira Machado, Luiz Simões Lopes, and Julio Barbosa (Director-General of the Federal Senate).[citation needed]
