Montgomery Ballet is a non-profit ballet company located in Montgomery, Alabama.[1] It was founded in 1958 as a civic ballet group, and grew into a professional organization.
History
[edit]Montgomery Ballet originated as the Montgomery Civic Ballet in 1958, initiated by a group of local dance enthusiasts committed to bringing classical ballet to the Montgomery area. The company operated as a civic ballet for several decades, focusing on local performances and dance education.
In 1984, Don Steffy was appointed Artistic Director, with Marylou Hume serving as Associate Director. Their leadership marked a pivotal moment in the organization's history. By 1987, the company transitioned into a professional ballet company, adopting the name Montgomery Ballet. This professionalization allowed the company to enhance its artistic quality and expand its reach within Alabama and the southeastern United States.
During this period, Montgomery Ballet was recognized by the Alabama State Council on the Arts as an "Advanced Arts Institution," a designation that enabled the company to participate in state-wide touring. The same year, it was named the "Official Performing Ballet Company of the City of Montgomery," reflecting its prominence within the local cultural community.
