Monique Sorgen is a French-American film and TV director and a screenwriter, author and playwright.[1]

Early Life:

Born in San Francisco to parents Michael Sorgen, a civil rights lawyer, and Francoise Sorgen-Goldschmidt (née Levy), a French professor at UC Berkeley, Monique was raised in both San Francisco and Paris, speaking both French and English. Her parents divorced and remarried. She graduated early from Berkeley High School, and then moved to Los Angeles at 17, where she majored in Theater at University of California, Los Angeles, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She has three siblings, Valerie Braimah, Jeremy Sorgen, and Zach Sorgen.

Career:

After graduating for UCLA, Sorgen worked as a directors’ assistant to Kim Friedman on network television shows for NBC, CBS, and UPN. She made a short film “Pants on Fire” starring Cress Williams and Ronny Cox, which was distributed internationally on airlines and television networks, including on ARTE in France and Germany.

She wrote for television series “Blind Date” starring Roger Lodge and “Don’t Forget Your Toothbush” starring Mark Curry, as well asKimora: Life in the Fab Lane for E! Entertainment. In 2016, Sorgen created and was the series director on “No Grey Skies” for FashionOne TV.[2]

Sorgen is one of the hosts of the Writer’s Guild of America West's podcast, 3rd & Fairfax [3]. She has interviewed over 40 writers of film and television, including Aline Brosh McKenna, Pete Holmes, Danny McBride, Seth Meyers, Brittani Nichols, Gina Prince Bythewood and Reggie Rock.

In 2019, Sorgen wrote and directed “Sorry, Not Sorry”[4][5] starring Wallace Langham, Jessica Oyelowo, and M. Emmet Walsh.[6] [7] The film won multiple festival awards [8][9] and was released on Omeleto.com, where it won the Best of Omeleto award. In 2021, her film “Rock a Bye Baby”, starring Mo McCrae and Scott Krinsky, won multiple awards, including first place at Just For Laughs “Eat My Shorts” competition [10], before being released on Film Shortage. In 2023, she released her award-winning puppet sitcom web series, "Codependent Socks!"[11] starring the voices of Wallace Langham, Reiko Ayelsworth, and Zainab Johnson, on KoldOpen in the United States, and Flixxo in Argentina. Sorgen also won awards for the short drama she directed, “Random Check” written by and starring Sara AlRoshoud, with performances by Reid Miller and Sandra Saad.[12]

Sorgen is an alumna of the Sony TV Diverse Directors Program.[13]

In 2013, Sorgen self-published the novel How Long You Should Wait to Have Sex. In 2017, one of Sorgen's short stories appeared in the anthology “Empower: Mind Over Matter.”

Playwright

In 2022, her One-Act play “Gaslighting” was published by Next Stage Press in Volume 2 of  the one-act play compilation “Guilded”.[14]

Advocacy

Along with Maria Burton, Susan Dynner, and Nandi Bowe, Sorgen is a co-founder of GenXX[15], an initiative to raise awareness and create opportunities for the women directors of Generation X, who lost out on opportunities between the sexism they faced pre #MeToo, and the ageism they faced after it.
