Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho (October 9, 1998 – July 18, 2024) was a Bangladeshi student and social activist known for his involvement in scouting and humanitarian activities. He was actively engaged in social service, particularly through his participation in Bangladesh Scouts. Mugdho was killed by a headshot in the Azampur area of Uttara, near Crescent Hospital, on July 18, 2024, during the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement while assisting protesters.[1][2][3][4]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Mugdho was born in Brahmanbaria Sadar, Bangladesh. He attended the Islamic Education Society (I.E.S) School and College for his primary education and later enrolled in Uttara High School and College. Mugdho pursued a bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Khulna University and was studying for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) at the time of his death.[5][6][7]

Death

[edit]

On July 18, 2024, Mugdho was helping protesters during a demonstration related to quota reforms in Bangladesh. While giving out water and biscuits in the Azampur area of Uttara, near Crescent Hospital, he was shot in the head. The bullet entered his forehead and exited through his right ear, and he was declared dead at Crescent Hospital. After the incident, several government officials, including Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, education advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina; Shamsun Nahar Begum, state minister for education; and Naheed Ezaher Khan, state minister for cultural affairs, visited the area and spoke with those involved.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
