Mikko Rahkamaa (b. 21 september, 1981 Oulu) is former Finnish football goalkeeper. He has M.Sc. Finance degree from Aalto University School of Business and is PhD candidate in Management and Organization at Tampere University with topic about strategy and banking. Rahkamaa has worked since retiring from soccer mostly in financial sector, specifically banking and investments.

Club Career

First team that Rahkamaa represented was Pateniemen Urheilijat. His parent club is though Oulun Luistinseura, OLS. As a B junior his team won promotion in first division and next year national championship, back then with least conceded goals during season tying with previous record.  He was voted as a clubs most promising youth player with another person from the team.

First adult team as a semiprofessional was FC Tervarit in second national division, third highest competition. Although before preseason Rahkamaa joined FC Jokerit for a week test period. He wrote two-year professional contract with FC Jokerit as 17 year old keeping him one season in Tervarit as a semiprofessional. Team won the division title and promotion.

Next season Rahkamaa joined FC Jokerit in Helsinki, but played mostly in reserve team FC Jokrut and was second goalkeeper in Finnish premier league games. The team was second in premier league. After season he began compulsory military service in Tuusula while finishing gymnasium. During second season Rahkamaa was given opportunity with regular playing time with different trainer and played as a first choice also in Uefa-Cup qualifications against TsSKA Kiev. Nevertheless he didn’t play during relegation playoffs and the team was relegated.

Contract ended with FC Jokerit and Rahkamaa joined FC Twente for one week test period. Rahkamaa signed 2.5 year contract with the Overrijsel team in 2001. After joining the club he was made second goalkeeper in the first team. He debuted in home game filling in after the other goalkeeper received red card. In next game Rahkamaa was for the first time in starting eleven whilst being among youngest goalkeepers to play in Dutch Eredivisie that season. Next two seasons Rahkamaa played in reserve team and was third choice in the first team. During the tenure Rahkamaa had expressed his wishes to join second highest professional league for playing time, but the club was unwilling.

Next Rahkamaa signed two-year contract with Go Ahead Eagles a Gouden Gids (Eerste divisie) club. During first season Rahkamaa played as a first goalkeeper. The team managed to gain a spot in national cup within last-16, but they didn’t have notable success in Gouden Gids. Second season started as a first choice, but due to injuries Rahkamaa missed several games. During later stage of the season Rahkamaa had set his mind returning to Finland for personal reasons, a decision that guaranteed him no playing time during second part of the season.         

He returned to Finland and maintained his condition by training and suffered several injuries. For season 2007 Rahkamaa signed one-year contract with promoted Premier league team FC Viikingit to be their first goalkeeper. He played one game in winter league and was injured most of the season including preseason. Rahkamaa took a loan period in Gamlakarleby Bollklub to play just in two games. Goalkeeper suffered career ending injury during first period of the last game where he kept clean sheet. After season he was operated and decision not to return to the game was finalized.

International Career

Rahkamaa Debuted in youth national team U18 in 1999. Next year he played in two national team games. He participated as a second goalkeeper youth European Championships in Germany from which the national team gained a spot in World Championships in Argentina 2001. Rahkamaa was reserve choice in the youth world cup while at the same attending compulsory military service. During next two years Rahkamaa represented young Finland in five games being mostly second goalkeeper of the team.

Personal life

Rahkamaa has two children and has once divorced. He grew in Oulu with parents and two siblings. His father is the co-founder of the first Northern Finnish stock listed company in the mid-90s by name Nokia Cables known as PKC Group. Relatives also include former emeritus professor in chemistry and dean who designed nuclear weapon systems. He is second Finnish goalkeeper to play in Eredivisie and first with one sport while representing FC Twente.
