Michael Agyekum Addo was born on 3 January 1950 in Suhyen, near Koforidua in the Eastern Region. Addo was a renowned entrepreneur who left an indelible mark on Ghana's pharmaceutical industry. He established the KAMA Group of Companies, a conglomerate with multiple subsidiaries, including a pharmaceutical production company. Addo's business acumen and vision played a significant role in shaping the pharmaceutical landscape in Ghana.

In addition to his business achievements, Addo held a traditional title as the Nkabomhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area in Koforidua, Eastern Region.[1]

Early life and education

Addo's life was a testament to his resilience and determination. From a young age, he faced significant challenges, including caring for his siblings when his mother fell ill. Despite these hardships, he took over his mother's grocery business to ensure their survival.

Addo's educational journey was marked by notable achievements. He completed his secondary education at Ghana Senior High School in Koforidua and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) .

He furthered his education by obtaining a postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Management in 1982 and a Master's degree in Industrial Management with a focus on entrepreneurship in 1998. The crowning glory of his academic pursuits was graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from the University of Ghana in January 2022, at the impressive age of 72.[2]

Nana Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo's entrepreneurial journey began in 1986 with the founding of KAMA Group, which started as a modest pharmaceutical shop in Kumasi. Through his visionary leadership and relentless drive, he transformed the business into a thriving conglomerate with diversified subsidiaries in manufacturing, retail, real estate, and microfinance.

Addo's unwavering dedication to his business was exemplified by his remarkable work ethic. For an entire decade, he worked tirelessly without taking a single holiday, driven by an unrelenting passion for success. His sacrifices during this period laid the foundation for his eventual triumph, serving as a testament to his perseverance and commitment to achieving his goals.

Through the Kama Education Project, Nana Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo empowered teachers to foster entrepreneurial skills in students from a young age. Additionally, he authored several books aimed at instilling a positive and resilient mindset in the younger generation, encouraging them to adopt a "can-do" attitude and reach their full potential.[3]

Dr. Addo had 9 children with is late wife, whom he met at secondary school.[4]

Death

He died on Thursday 31 October 2024 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.[5]
