Michael Wijaya Goutama (born 10 July 1961) is an Indonesian engineer and academic recognized for his contributions to renewable energy and sustainable development. He completed his undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, specializing in renewable energy systems and environmental engineering. Goutama currently serves as a professor at the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and has held several advisory roles within the Indonesian government. His work has significantly advanced clean energy technologies across Southeast Asia. In 2024, he was named an Honorary Fellow of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO).[1]

Education

[edit]

Goutama began his higher education at the University of Toronto, where he completed his undergraduate degree in engineering on a scholarship. He continued at the same institution for his postgraduate studies, earning both his master's and Ph.D. in engineering, focusing on renewable energy systems. His doctoral research revolved around developing sustainable energy technologies, particularly solar energy systems, which laid the foundation for his future work in the field.

Academic career

[edit]

Goutama is currently a professor at the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. His research focuses on renewable energy technologies, environmental sustainability, and integrating clean energy systems into existing infrastructures. He has published extensively on solar energy and sustainable infrastructure, contributing significantly to the academic discourse on climate change and green technology adoption.

In addition to his role at Tsukuba, Goutama serves on the International Council at the University of Toronto, advising on global engineering initiatives and sustainability programs.[2]

Government and advisory roles

[edit]

Goutama has held several influential advisory roles within the Indonesian government. He has served as a special advisor to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, where his expertise in renewable energy and sustainable development has been instrumental in shaping national energy policies. His work has significantly contributed to Indonesia's energy transition, particularly in expanding solar energy capacity and improving maritime infrastructure.[3]

He has also played a key role in enhancing economic ties between Indonesia and Singapore through his work with the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry. His leadership in promoting sustainable trade and infrastructure projects has helped strengthen cooperation between the two nations.

Industry leadership

[edit]

In addition to his academic and government roles, Goutama serves as co-chair of the Executive Committee for Engineering20 (E20), an international forum that brings together engineers and policymakers to address global challenges related to sustainability and technological innovation. Under his leadership, E20 has developed frameworks for expanding the use of renewable energy technologies across Southeast Asia.[4]

Goutama's expertise in renewable energy has made him a sought-after consultant for companies and institutions seeking to implement sustainable practices. He has advised numerous organizations on integrating solar energy technologies into their operations, particularly in the development of large-scale projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions in Southeast Asia.

Honors and recognition

[edit]

In 2024, Goutama was awarded the Honorary Fellow title by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) in recognition of his contributions to engineering and sustainable development in Southeast Asia.[5]

Contributions to sustainability

[edit]

Throughout his career, Goutama has been an advocate for renewable energy adoption, particularly solar power. His work has been pivotal in implementing sustainable energy systems across Southeast Asia, where he has advised both governments and private organizations on best practices for integrating renewable energy into existing infrastructure.
