Michael G. Aguinaldo is a Filipino lawyer and public servant currently serving as Chairman of the Philippine Competition Commission[1]. He previously served as Chairman of the Commission on Audit from 2015 to 2022.
Aguinaldo studied Philosophy at De La Salle University and earned his AB in 1987[2]. He then attended Ateneo de Manila University Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. He took the Bar Examinations in 1992, eventually placing 7th among all examinees. He holds a master's degree in International economic law from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor[1].
In 2011, Aguinaldo was appointed Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs during the Benigno S. Aquino III administration. In 2015, he was appointed Chair of the Commission on Audit, succeeding Ma. Gracia Pulido-Tan. Aguinaldo left office at the end of his term on February 2, 2022. He was succeeded by former Davao City Accountant Rizalina Justol. Justol's appointment sparked controversy as Justol was one of the respondents (along with then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte)to a plunder complaint filed with the Office of the Ombudsman in 2010[3].
He was appointed to become Chair of the Commission on Audit on January 7, 2023, succeeding Dr. Arsenio Balisacan, who was appointed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as Secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority[4]. He took his oath on January 13, 2023[5].
