Merlin the Magical Puppy is a British stop-motion animated series produced by The Little Entertainment Company and Entertainment Rights that aired on CITV from 2001 until 2003.

Synopsis

The series centers on a black labrador retriever who has a magical collar that can take him on all sorts of adventures.

Characters

Except for the listed characters, all characters featured are voiced by Rob Rackstraw.

Animals

For the animal characters, human speech is used to translate their sounds over them. (eg, barking)

  • Merlin (voiced by Martin Clunes), A black labrador retriever owned by Ernie. He usually gets himself into all sorts of adventures using his magical mystical collar using the magical "Wish" word, although he doesn't always understand or know how it works properly.
  • Oscar, an orange Cat belonging to the Crabtree family. He has the tendency to torment and annoy Merlin, usually getting himself into trouble.
  • Gull, a Seagull who Merlin tends to ask for advice for. He doesn't always remember Merlin's name, normally just calling him "Dog".
  • Reg the Hedge, a brown Hedgehog.
  • Kizzie (voiced by Dawn French), Miss Parkway's Dog and Merlin's love interest. Much like Merlin, Kizzie is also a labrador retriever, but is tan-in-colour.

Humans

  • Ernie the Harbour Master, Sandy Bay's harbour master and the owner of Merlin.
  • Miss Parkway (voiced by Dawn French), One of Merlin's neighbours who owns Kizzie the Dog. She usually has her garden dug up by Merlin.
  • Albert the Shop Keeper, The shopkeeper of the magic shop that sold Merlin's magical mystical collar to Ernie.
  • Mr. Pickles, a Fisherman.
  • Mr. Stanley Crabtree, another neighbor of Merlin's who is also a fisherman. He is the owner of Oscar the Cat.
  • Mrs. Crabtree, the wife of Mr. Crabtree.
  • Charlotte (voiced by Dawn French), Mr. Crabtree's younger niece.

Merlin is having trouble trying to find a bone and is causing complaints by the Sandy Bay residents. Ernie decides to buy a collar for him. He purchases a "Magical" collar, and once Merlin spurts out the magic "Wish" word, it sends him on his very first adventure.
2"Merlin On Ice"2001 (2001)
Merlin discovers what ice skating is from Mr. Pickles. After meeting Mrs. Parkway's Dog, Kizzie for the first time, Merlin wishes to ice skate with her. However, he has a bit of trouble learning how to ice skate.
3"Merlin's Movie Magic"2001 (2001)
When Merlin finds out about a sheriff dog movie, Charlotte suggests that he should become a movie star. When Merlin wishes just that, he discovers how much work it really can be.
4"The Summer Fair"2001 (2001)
It's the Sandy Bay summer fair. After Merlin accidentally meddles around with the carousel and is sent back to his kennel, he wishes for his own summer fair.
5"Merlin and the Picnic"2001 (2001)
When Merlin overhears that Miss Parkway, Kizzie and the Crabtrees are all going on a picnic, he gets jealous that he has to stay with Ernie. Merlin wishes to have a picnic with all his friends, but he learns that it's not always peaceful.
6"King of the Castle"2001 (2001)
Oscar is causing his usual tactics and making a mess of Merlin's kennel, getting him the blame from Ernie. When he talks about how a King respects their authorities, Merlin wishes to be a King, but little does he know that the job takes on far more responsibility.
7"Captain Merlin"2001 (2001)
Interested in hearing Mr. Pickles' and Mr. Crabtree's fishing stories and given a toy boat by Ernie, Merlin wishes to be the captain of his own boat - the Salty Sea Dog. However, a dinner of fish and the antics of Oscar prove to be trouble.
8"Merlin and the Magic Show"2001 (2001)
Merlin enjoys magic, and when he believes he isn't able to go to the magic show, he wishes he was a magician. However, his tricks fail to impress.
9"Inspector Merlin"2001 (2001)
Oscar causes his usual trouble, this time disguising himself as Merlin and getting the real Merlin blamed for stealing food. He wishes to be a detective and see who has really been stealing the Sandy Bay food.
10"Twin Merlin"2001 (2001)
After discovering that, Merlin wishes for a twin brother, but everything soon gets a bit confusing.
11"Merlin, Secret Agent"2001 (2001)
One night when Ernie and Mr. Pickles are fixing the lighthouse, Merlin overhears a conversation about a secret agent story. He wishes to be a Secret Agent, and with Reg the Hedge, he goes on a mission to rescue Kizzie from Dr. Whiskers (Oscar).
