Memetechno, wankertechno, trashrave or troll-'n-bass is an electronic music genre that emerged in The Netherlands in 2022. The genre is a combination of. The genre combines hard techno and drum-'n-bass with the anti-establishment ideology of punk, a DIY-mentality and funny lyrics.[1] The producers making this type of music usually remain anonymous.[2]

Popularity

The genre quickly made itself popular. Songs made by producers like Gladde Paling, Natte Visstick and Vieze Asbak have been streamed millions of times and ended up in Spotify's Top 50.

An example of a typical memetechno song is Visstick gooi die kanker kick, which was even noted on the Dutch Single Top 100 and the Tipparade of the Dutch top 40. In September of 2022 a commotion arose among enthusiasts after publisher Cloud9 sent an e-mail to affiliated producers calling them to capitalise on popularity. The e-mail called for working anonymously, to not mention the name of the publisher, and proposals were made for artist names.[1]

Style

Memetechno is hard and fast-paced techno music with a bpm between 140-150. Artists use samples from diverse pieces of meda, from advertisements to memes.
