Mechi Shakur is an Indianapolis based artist who focuses primarily on the Black Experience in America.[1][2]
Early Life

[edit]Mechi Shakur is a self taught painter and muralist. In June 2020, he painted a mural on the Indiana Repertory Theatre windows as part of a project led by St’ArtUp 317, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and PATTERN magazine. This mural, titled "BLKKK Lives Don’t Matter" featured a police car driving over a large group of words, such as "civil rights", "freedom," "George Floyd," "Sandra Bland," and "justice." The mural was made to emphasize the harmful role police play in Black American's lives and issues of self determination.[1][3]
In 2021, Shakur painted a "A Tale of Two Cities" on a canoe as part of the White River Alliance art initiative. The piece portrayed a single city with two different perspectives, one flourishing with many opportunities and the other run down, with little opportunity.[4]
