Matthew "Matty" Gregg (born June 25, 1978) is a Business Professional & Owner, Designer, Politician, and Philanthropist who is known for his run across America in 2018 and 2019. He is also known for his technology contributions to the retail and finance industries as well as his humanitarian efforts.
Early life and education
[edit]Matty Gregg was born Matthew Benjamin Doris in Nashua, NH on June 25, 1978 to Arthur and Patricia Doris at St. Joseph's Hospital. His biological father passed away suddenly at the age of 9. His stepfather (now adopted father), David A. Gregg III, married Patricia in 1988. He has one brother and four sisters. Matty graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1996 and College of the Holy Cross in 2000, where he studied political science.[1]
Professional and political career
[edit]His parents founded New Hampshire (magazine) in 1988. Matty worked there throughout his childhood until his mid-twenties, serving through a major acquisition. While working at NH Magazine, Matty created, conceptualized, and co-founded the New Hampshire Theatre Awards in 2002 for the purpose of creating a performing arts community across the state of New Hampshire.
In 2004, Matty left New Hampshire to write a musical in New York about the events of 9/11. There, he worked on several important architectural projects, including the Top of the Rock at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. He joined Apple Inc. in 2005, and was part of the store opening team at Apple Fifth Avenue in 2006. During his time at Fifth Avenue, he created a store prototype that infused training, scheduling, and operations that would later be the basis behind Apple's RetailMe system[2]. That system was the first globally deployed native iPad app at Apple, and would go on to be the model for many Retail systems in the industry. Matty would go on to help lead Talent-related efforts for the company, as well as the global expansion of Apple Pay.
Matty was the Head of Talent Management for First Republic Bank up until its collapse. He also owns and operates a theatre company that produces national touring shows.
Matty was elected to the Board of Public Works for Nashua, New Hampshire in 2023. His great uncle, Hugh Gregg, was a former Nashua mayor and Governor of New Hampshire. His second cousin, Judd Gregg and wife, Alicia Gregg, also served in the State House.
Philanthropy
[edit]Throughout his life, Matty worked as a fundraiser for several charities. He would raise money by participating in extreme events, such as 24-hour Tough Mudders, Ultramarathons, and the Boston Marathon. These events would net over $600,000 for charity. In recognition of this work, in 2017, he was named the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships Humanitarian of the Year.
Run across America
[edit]When he was young, Matty was inspired to run across America by Terry Fox. This led to him to leave his job at Apple and run back to his home state of New Hampshire over the course of nine months. He started at Apple Park on November 6, 2018, and ended his run at the Concord, NH State House on August 7th, 2019. He averaged almost a marathon a day.[3]
His run is known as one of the longest consecutive runs in history, spanning nine months and almost twice the distance from New York to California.
His run benefitted Firefighter Cancer Support Network.[4] During his run, Matty visited well over 200 fire stations.
Personal life
[edit]Matty met his wife, Alicia Gregg, and his three adopted children on the Run across America, outside of Nashville, TN. They now reside in Nashua, New Hampshire. Alicia is now a State Representative for Nashua.
