Matthew Straw (born 1997) is an American conductor.

Early Life

Matthew Straw began his musical education at age four with cello, and shortly after began ballet, composition, cello, drama, and voice lessons. His mother, Melissa Straw, prepared choruses for the Missouri Symphony.[1] [2]. In 2014 he won 1st place in the Schmidt High School Vocal Competition in Chicago, Illinois, and in 2015, he won a National YoungArts Award from the National YoungArts Foundation [3] [4].

Straw studied conducting, piano, philosophy and voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Oberlin College, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Robert Spano, Mark Stringer, and Stanislav Ioudenitch [5].

He took master classes and fellowships in conducting at the Aspen Music Festival, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Järvi Academy, and New World Symphony with Stéphane Denève, James Gaffigan, Nicholas McGegan, Cristian Măcelaru, Ludovic Morlot, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Mark Stringer, Michael Tilson-Thomas, and Robert Spano. He was the Helen F. Whitaker Conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and School in 2019 [6].

Work

In March of 2023, Straw conducted the Utah Symphony and was appointed Assistant Conductor [7]. In May 2024, Straw conducted Opéra national du Rhin and was appointed Assistant Conductor and a member of their Opera Studio [8].

Straw has conducted the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, Rochester Philharmonic, Aspen Music Festival, Utah Symphony, Reims Opera House, Des Moines Metro Opera, and Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. He has served as an assistant conductor for Donald Runnicles, Cristian Macelaru, and Kazushi Ono, working with the Brussels Philharmonic, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony, and Salzburg Festival [9]

In July of 2024, Straw became the youngest conductor since Lorin Maazel to conduct the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Center for the Arts[10]
