On November 13, 2024, president-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Matt Gaetz, then-representative from Florida and a former attorney, as the United States attorney general to succeed Merrick Garland, whom Joe Biden had nominated in January 2021.

Matt Gaetz is a former representative for Florida's 1st congressional district who served from January 2017 until his resignation in November 2024, after he was named by Trump. He was the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation that concluded in February 2023 and a House Committee on Ethics inquiry that ended after his resignation.[1]

Gaetz's resignation

Hours after Trump's announcement, Gaetz resigned, ending a House Committee on Ethics investigation against him. His resignation will lead to a special election for his seat.[2]
