Mathematical Research Institute MATRIX is situated on Dja Dja Wurrung traditional land in Creswick, Victoria, Australia.

History

It was initiated in 2015 by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS^[1]) and launched in 2016 as a partnership between The University of Melbourne and Monash University. The Australian National University joined as a full partner in 2020, and The University of Queensland joined in 2024.

In early 2021, MATRIX received support from the US based Simons Foundation. In 2022, MATRIX was supported as critical research infrastructure by the Australian Research Council (ARC) through the award of a Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grant.

Governance and Leadership

MATRIX's governance structure consists of a Stakeholder Group, an Advisory Board, a Scientific Committee, and an Executive Team^[2]. The institution is currently led by Professor Jan de Gier (The University of Melbourne). The Deputy Directors are Professor Uri Onn (The Australian National University), Professor David Wood (Monash University) and Professor Joseph Grotowski (The University of Queensland).

Research

MATRIX hosts residential research programs for the mathematical sciences programs that encompass a broad spectrum of mathematical sciences, including pure and applied mathematics, statistics, data science, mathematical physics, and computational mathematics. It also hosts PhD Student Research Symposia^[3] in partnership with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI).

The MATRIX Book Series, published by Springer, documents its scientific activities^[4].
