Martin County Sheriff's Office

The Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency serving Martin County, located on the Atlantic coast of Florida. Founded in 1857, MCSO is responsible for enforcing state and local laws, maintaining order, and ensuring public safety within its jurisdiction.

History

MCSO was established to address the needs of Martin County's growing population and increasing demands for law enforcement. Over the years, MCSO has expanded its operations and services to meet the changing safety and security needs of the community. According to the sheriffs office "the agency also provides related law enforcement services to the entire county, including:

  • Assistance to municipal agencies
  • Civil and criminal process
  • Crime prevention and education programs
  • Providing school crossing guards and resource officers for the Martin County School District
  • Victim assistance services

The Sheriff is also responsible for the administration and every day operation of the Martin County Jail."[1]

Jurisdiction

Martin County covers approximately 753 square miles (1,950 km2), of which 543 square miles (1,410 km2) is land and (27.8%) is water. [2]The Sheriff's Office jurisdiction spans rural areas, suburban neighborhoods, coastal regions, and the costal waters which bring unique law enforcement challenges.

On January 8, 2013, Sheriff William D. Snyder was sworn into office, becoming Martin County’s 8th Sheriff[1]. The Office has many Divisions, according to their website:

Notable Events and Accomplishments

Apprehension of 2nd Assassin

On September 16th, 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man, was arrested after a shooting incident near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The event began when Secret Service agents noticed Routh near the golf course, where former President Donald Trump was present. Routh reportedly fled the scene after shots were fired but was apprehended later on Interstate 95 by deputies from the Martin County Sheriff's Office.[3]
