Maria Butt, commonly known as Maria B, is a Pakistani fashion designer and the founder and CEO of the Maria B label.[2] She has been in the Pakistani fashion industry for two decades.[3][4][5]
Early life and career
[edit]In 1998, Maria B. graduated from the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD), Lahore. The following year, in 1999, she started her career with a retail outlet and a small sewing unit.[3] Despite encountering various challenges, notably financial struggles following her divorce, she successfully cultivated a thriving brand.[2]
Controversies
[edit]Maria B is often in the news for her more controversial ideas than her designs.[6] She has faced criticism for her views on transgender rights[7] and her comments against what she calls 'desi liberals'. He also faced backlash for having an unauthorised photo shoot at a private family cemetery.[8]
Advocacy and views
[edit]She has criticized the influence of the West on Pakistani society. He has also spoken out against the perceived intrusion of 'gender agendas' into Pakistani society.[9]
Butt has also been involved in humanitarian efforts, most notably the recent Save Gaza Campaign as she as Patron for it.[10] The campaign was launched worldwide in response to the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, who were facing an unrelenting war.[11] The purpose of the campaign was to organize advocacy, relief and rescue efforts using all available peaceful and legal means.[12]
