Mapleshade's Vengeance is a novella written by multiple writers under the pen name Erin Hunter and published by HarperCollins.
Development
[edit]Vicky Holmes announced the production of a then unnamed Mapleshade focused book on her Facebook account on March 31, 2014, in which she asked her followers give her what information was known about the character of Mapleshade at the time.[1] The title of the novella, Mapleshade's Vengeance, was announced on August 29, 2014.[2]
Plot
[edit]At a Gathering (a meeting held between the warrior clans every full moon) An orange and white cat named Mapleshade recalls a battle where the RiverClan cat Appledusk kills two ThunderClan cats, Birchface and Flowerpaw. She reveals to her secret mate Appledusk that she's pregnant. Appledusk is happy to hear this, but is called away by a RiverClan warrior named Reedshine.
The next morning, Mapleshade reveals to ThunderClan that she's expecting kittens. A cat named Frecklewish, sister to Birchface, excitedly assumes that Mapleshade is expecting Birchface's kittens. Mapleshade goes along with this and assures herself she's not in the wrong because she's not technically lying and is happy that Frecklewish made a convenient excuse for her.
Later, Mapleshade gives birth to two sons named Larchkit and Patchkit, and a daughter named Petalkit. The ThunderClan leader, Oakstar, vows revenge on Appledusk for killing his son Birchface and says that the new kittens will make ThunderClan a powerful clan. Two months later, a clan elder named Rabbitfur comments on Latchkit and Petalkit's inability to jump like Birchface. Mapleshade takes her kits for a walk out of camp and to the river separating RiverClan and ThunderClan. Patchkit swims out to a branch and is noticed by Appledusk in a RiverClan border patrol. He saved Patchkit and discretely tells Mapleshade that he's proud of the kits. Mapleshade and her kits are stopped by the ThunderClan medicine cat Ravenwing who tells her that he had an omen about the kits being half-clan and goes to tell Oakstar.
At camp, Oakstar banishes Mapleshade and her kits for breaking the warrior code. Mapleshade and her kits attempt to cross the river in a storm, but the kits drown in the current while Mapleshade is saved by Appledusk. Mapleshade is brought to the RiverClan camp where Appledusk is forced to reveal his relationship with Mapleshade. The loss of his kits is considered punishment enough and Mapleshade is forced to leave RiverClan territory. Mapleshade wanders to a barn and falls asleep. She is woken up by a kittypet named Myler who offers her a place to stay. Mapleshade hears the voice of her dead kits and leaves. Mapleshade walks along the ThunderClan border until she collapses from exhaustion. Ravenwing's apprentice, Nettlepaw, finds Mapleshade and informs her that Frecklewish saw Mapleshade attempting to cross the river. Mapleshade decides to avenge her kits by killing Ravenwing and leaves for the Moonstone.
When Ravenwing arrives for the medicine cat meeting, Mapleshade kills him and hides. After the other medicine cats find him and bury him, Mapleshade desecrates his grave and hears the voices of her dead kits again. She decides that she needs to kill two more cats to avenge her kits and returns back to ThunderClan territory where she leads Frecklewish to Snakerocks. After blaming Frecklewish for the death of her kits, she uncovers a rock, allowing an adder to bite Frecklwish in the eye, which later kills her. Mapleshade makes her way to the RiverClan border and climbs a tree to wait for Appledusk. Appledusk arrives with his apprentice Perchpaw and his mate Reedshine, who reveals that she's pregnant with Appledusk's kits. Later, Mapleshade finds Perchpaw alone and holds him hostage. When Appledusk arrives, Mapleshade threatens to kill Perchpaw unless Appledusk fights her. Appledusk refuses just as Reedshine appears. Mapleshade jumps at Reedshine but Appledusk blocks her and is killed in the process. Perchpaw bites Mapleshade's neck causing her to start bleeding. Before she leaves, Mapleshade sees Patchkit near Appledusk's body announcing that him and his siblings are free. Mapleshade flees and Reedshine stops Perchpaw from following her.
Mapleshade retreats to Myler's barn. Myler tries to heal her wounds but she succumbs to blood loss. She wakes up in a dark place and a voice tells her that she's in "The Place of No Stars," and Mapleshade comments on how she'll be able to find other like-minded cats such as herself.
