Mandy Yin is a Malaysian-born restaurateur, author and TV chef based in London, United Kingdom.[1][2][3] She founded her food business Sambal Shiok in 2013, before opening her first restaurant Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar in 2018.[4] She has appeared in several television cooking programmes and is the author of Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook.[5][6][7]
Early life
[edit]Yin is Malaysian with Peranakan Nyonya and Southern Chinese heritage. She was born in Petaling Jaya, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur and moved to London with her family when she was 11 years old.[1]
Career
[edit]Yin studied law and was a corporate lawyer until 2013 when she changed careers.[1]
Yin launched Sambal Shiok as a street food concept in 2013 specialising in chicken satay burgers before transforming it into a pop-up laksa noodle bar between 2015 to 2018.[1]
In December 2016, Yin’s pop-up restaurant in Harringay Green Lanes received a positive review from Jay Rayner of The Observer.[8]
Yin was named by The Evening Standard Magazine as one of the top tastemakers in the London food scene in June 2017.[9]
After a series of pop-up laksa bars across London, Yin opened Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar in Highbury, Islington in 2018 to critical acclaim for her signature Peranakan Nyonya curry laksa.[4][1]
Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar won Ching He Huang’s Best Innovation Award at The Golden Chopsticks Awards 2019 and North London’s Favourite Restaurant Award in Time Out’s Love Local Awards 2021.[10][11]
In 2022 Yin was named as one of CODE Hospitality's 100 Most Influential Women.[12] She also worked with Tom Parker-Bowles to host a private dinner as part of Mastercard’s Hidden Gems Dining Experience series in 2022.[13]
In 2023 Yin was named as one of "the hottest chefs in London" by Time Out.[14]
Food writing
[edit]Yin’s debut book Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook was released on 14 October 2021 by Quadrille.[7] The book was nominated for several food writing awards:
- Shortlisted for the Fortnum and Masons Food and Drink Awards 2022 Debut Cookery Book[15]
- Guild of Food Writer’s Awards, Highly Commended in ‘First Book’ category[16]
- Shortlisted for Andre Simon Award 2021.[17]
Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook was selected as Jamie Oliver Cookbook Club’s cookbook of the month for February 2022.[18]
Yin has also written for many other publications and food magazines including The Guardian,[19] The Observer Food Monthly,[20] Waitrose Food Magazine,[21] Great British Chefs,[22] The Evening Standard,[23] National Geographic Traveller,[24] Vittles[25] and Olive Magazine.[26]
Broadcasting career
[edit]Yin is known for her appearances on various cookery programmes. She is a regular guest chef on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen hosted by Matt Tebutt and a guest judge on BBC’s Masterchef: The Professionals.[2]
In 2024 Yin also appeared on news programmes such as BBC Newsnight, talking about the challenges faced by independent hospitality.[27]
In 2019 she hosted an hour-long episode of Nadia’s Family Feasts with Nadia Sawalha on ITV.[28]
In 2016 she appeared in John Torode’s Malaysian Adventure on UK Good Food Channel.[23]
