Political Activism

[edit]

Mahmoud Akot has played a key role in South Sudanese politics as an advocate for democracy and human rights. He has focused his efforts on addressing corruption and political reform in South Sudan, voicing concerns over the hindrance of democratic processes by political elites.[1]

Role in the National Democratic Movement (NDM)

[edit]

Akot served as the spokesperson for the National Democratic Movement (NDM), a political organization led by Dr. Lam Akol. The NDM is a prominent opposition group that advocates for democratic governance and political reform in South Sudan. [2]

In August 2023, Mahmoud Akot resigned from his role as spokesperson, citing the party's "double standards" as a reason for his departure. In his resignation, he expressed disappointment over internal dynamics within the party that he believed were counterproductive to the movement's goals of achieving democracy. His resignation was widely reported in regional media sources. [3] [4]

Advocacy for Democracy and Human Rights

[edit]

Throughout his career, Akot has been vocal about issues related to corruption and governance in South Sudan. He has written opinion pieces and participated in public discussions on the role of South Sudanese political elites in hindering democratic progress.[5]

In a 2024 opinion article, Akot criticized the South Sudanese government for widespread corruption, calling it a collective failure of the nation's political elite to foster a transparent and democratic society. He has also expressed concern over the opposition's struggle with political maturity and the challenges they face in transitioning from armed movements to viable political organizations. [6]

In another interview, Akot discussed his role in reshuffling key government positions in local jurisdictions, citing the replacement of a county commissioner in July 2023 as part of his efforts to ensure proper governance at the grassroots level. [7]
