2006–2023: Early Life and personal life

[edit]

Bayley Lundon Hill was born on April 2, 2006, in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, the son of a South African mother with Xhosa ancestry and a South African father of mixed African-Indian and black English descent. Hill never met his father and spent his early life in Fish Hoek, moving to Quigney, East London at the age of 12. Hill was born half-deaf in his right ear. At the age of 13, Hill began growing facial hair. At 14, he began writing songs for other recording artists.

Hill was born when his mother was 18 years old. His family had financial troubles throughout his childhood. His mother struggled to provide for the family. Hill signed a contract for songwriting gigs at 14 and sold all of his songs, making $700 per month. In his 12 years of schooling, he attended 2 different schools in the Fish Hoek, Cape Town and Quigney, East London areas. At 15 Hill joined a soul band called, Fairy Garden. Writing and composing only two songs before leaving the band in October 2022, to join a hip hop soul band called, Us+Him. Writing only four songs before their disband in September 2024.

Hill lives in East London, South Africa. He has revealed on separate occasions that he experiences synesthesia and also has keratosis pilaris and hirsutism. He has been open about his struggles with mental health and insomnia.

Artistry

[edit]

Hill has named Lauryn Hill and Rihanna as his idols and primary musical inspirations and once dubbed himself Rihanna's biggest fan "in the whole world". Hill later went on to give interpolation credits to Lauryn Hill on his song "Dark Beauty" and retroactively credited Lauryn Hill, Rihanna and Frank Ocean on his song "Revenge Dress". In 2023, he called The Beatles former band member Paul McCartney his "hero of all heroes". Hill stated that his upcoming album, Dark Beauty is inspired by Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu's Baduizm, Rihanna's Rated R, Frank Ocean's Blonde, Jazmine Sullivan's Heaux Tales, Beyoncé's Dangerously In Love, the Weeknd's Beauty Behind the Madness, D'Angelo's Voodoo, 702's No Doubt, Selena Gomez's Rare, and Alicia Keys's Songs in A Minor. Hill's voice type is tenor. Media outlets describe him as a neo soul singer, with songs ranging from R&B, psychedelic pop, dark wave, hip hop soul, and jazz rap. Hill stated that he wants to be a songwriter and not the "biggest neo soul singer that ever lived".
