Live at Glasshaus is the live album by American singer-songwriter Bilal, released on June 14, 2024 by Glasshaus Presents.[1] Recorded at Glasshaus in Brooklyn, New York, Bilal was joined by Questlove, Common, Robert Glasper, and Burniss Travis, performing for an intimate audience of 100 fans.[1][2] In his review of the album, AllMusic biographer Andy Kellman describes it as “freewheeling and celebratory”.[3]
Background
[edit]Bilal attended New York City’s The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he met pianist Robert Glasper.[4] Around this time, he met members of the music collective known as the Soulquarians, including Questlove and Common who became lifelong collaborators.[4] Bilal and the artists worked on each other’s projects throughout the years, dating back to Common’s Like Water For Chocolate in 2000, and Bilal’s 1st Born Second in 2001.[5]
Recording and music
[edit]On December 2nd, 2023, Bilal performed a live concert joined by Questlove, Common, Robert Glasper, and Burniss Travis.[6] The set was an amalgamation of songs from Bilal’s 23-year career, including cuts from his debut album, 1st Born Second, his unreleased sophomore album, Love For Sale, his third album, Airtight’s Revenge, Common’s album Like Water For Chocolate, and the premiere of a new song, Humility.[7] It also includes two interludes from Questlove and Common.[1] The album is produced by Jarrett Wetherell, founder of Glasshaus Presents.[1]
Prior to the full release of the album, two singles were released. The first single and video was “Something to Hold”, a new take at the song originally recorded at the height of the Soulquarian era.[8] The second single was “All For Love”, also from Love For Sale.[9]
A companion concert documentary film is forthcoming, including interview commentary from the superstar ensemble.[10]
Critical reception
[edit]Live at Glasshaus received acclaim upon release with a 4 out of 5 star rating on AllMusic, as well as a 4.5 star rating from Shatter The Standards.[3][6] Brianna Harris of Okayplayer described the album as “a soulful, emotional revisiting of songs”. Harris also states: “By bringing in just a few of the people who were with him on his rise to musical acclaim, Bilal not only evokes strong feelings of nostalgia, but also makes the poignant statement that vulnerability lives in music, and we’re all stronger when we let it guide our day to day lives."[11] According to Shatter The Standards’ Nehemiah, Bilal’s voice “has this raw honesty that fits perfectly with the music, making you feel every bit of doubt and hope in every song he performs."[6]
