The Fault in Our Stars is a 2014 coming-of-age romance film[1][2] directed by Josh Boone.[3] Based on the 2012 novel of the same name by John Green, the adapted screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. It stars Shailene Woodley as Ansel Elgort in the leading roles; with Nat Wolff, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell and Willem Dafoe playing supporting roles. The storyline revolves around Hazel Grace Lancaster (Woodley), a sixteen-year-old teenager, diagnosed with thyroid cancer, was forced by her parents to attend a support group where she meets and subsequently falls in love with Augustus Waters (Elgort), a basketball player and an amputee, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. The film was dedicated to Esther Earl, an American author who was succumbed to thyroid cancer, and whom Green has inspired to write the novel.[4]
The Fault in Our Stars had its world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 16, 2014, and it won the 3rd runner-up for Golden Space Needle Award for Best Film.[5] Distributed by 20th Century Fox, the film had a premiere at New York on June 2, hosted by the film's team,[6] before receiving a theatrical release on June 6.[7] The film grossed over $307 million worldwide against a budget of $12 million.[8] It received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise given to Woodley's and Elgort's performances and chemistry together, as well as the screenplay, direction and other aspects of the film.[9] Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, surveyed 226 reviews and found 81 percent to be positive.[10]
At the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, the film nominated at seven categories and won of all them, mostly for the performances of the lead cast as well as their chemistry in the film.[11][12] The film won four out of six nominations at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards,[13] three out of seven nominations at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, including an award for Movie of the Year,[14][15] and one win at the Hollywood Film Awards,[16] which was the Best Breakout Performance Award (Actress) for Shailene Woodley.[17] The film was the strong contender for the 87th Academy Awards, to receive a nomination for Best Actress (Woodley) and Best Adapted Screenplay, but failed to shortlist at the ceremony.[18]
