2005–present
[edit]Starting in 2005, the NCAA updated its 64-team format to include 16 regionals seeded 1 through 4, identical to the baseball format that had begun in 1999.
The code in each cell represents the furthest the team made it in the respective tournament:
- R Team was selected for a Regional, but did not advance to the Regional Final.
- RF Team advanced to the final matchup(s) of the Regional but did not win it. (Does not specify if team forced the "if necessary" game.)
- SR Team won their Regional and advanced to the Super Regional round, but did not win it.
- WS Team advanced to the Women's College World Series, but did not reach the national semifinals.
- SF Team advanced to the national semifinals, but did not reach the national final.
- RU National Runner-up
- CH National Champion
Since 2007, the selection committee seeded the top 16 seeds in the tournament. The top 8 national seeds are shown with double underline, and the other eight regional 1-seeds are shown with single underline. These are usually, but not always, the 16 teams hosting in the Regional round.
