Introduced in "Godzilla"

[edit]

Ford Brody

[edit]

Ford Brody is the main protagonist of the 2014 film Godzilla. He is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson as an adult and by CJ Adams as a kid.

Ford is a United States Navy lieutenant and is the son of nuclear physicist Joe Brody and nuclear technician Sandra Brody. In 1999, when Ford was a kid a nuclear accident occurred at the Janjira Nuclear Power Plant where his parents work. The accident killed Sandra and caused father and son to become estranged after Joe starts to believe that something else caused the accident.

15 years later, Ford married a woman named Elle and had a son named Sam and is convinced by her to go to Japan to bail Joe out after he was caught trespassing in Janjira. He bails Joe out who convinces him to go to Janjira with him. The two travel to Janjira and find out that place is not radioactive. The duo are arrested by Monarch agents who bring them to the rebuilt power plant, now serving as a large laboratory studying a chrysalis. While Joe is being interrogated, the male MUTO breaks out of his chrysalis and starts to wreak havoc killing several Monarch officials including Joe.

After Joe's death, Ford is revealed to the truth of Monarch and that monsters exist by Doctors Ishirō Serizawa and Vivienne Graham.Ford told them about his hypothesis the MUTO was emitting long-range pulses as a means of communicating with something else. The military dropped him off in Honolulu to get back home on a plane.

While on a tram to the flight terminal, a young boy named Akio is separated from his parents when he is distracted by Ford's action figure he recovered from his home in Janjira. Ford promises to Akio's parents he would take care of him. The MUTO arrives at Honolulu and destroys the tram where Ford rescues Akio from falling to his death. The MUTO is driven of by Godzilla. The following morning, Ford reunites Akio with his parents and joined a military detachment heading off in pursuit of the creatures as they approached the U.S. mainland.

A larger female MUTO breaks out of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in Nevada and attacked Las Vegas before making its way toward the other MUTO. Monarch deduces the genders of the two MUTOs and believes they will likely reproduce. Ford warns Elle to get herself and Same out of the city while Admiral William Stenz plans to use a nuclear warhead to kill all three monsters. Citing his knowledge of such devices working as an E.O.D. and the worry his family might be in danger if they failed, Ford convinced the master sergeant Marcus Waltz in charge of the warheads' escorts to allow him on the train transporting the warhead.

The female MUTO attacks the train killing everyone except for Ford and devours most of the warheads. The remaining warheads and Ford are airlifted to San Francisco only for the male MUTO to steal the warhead and gift it to the female, who forms a nest in the Chinatown area.

Joining an extraction mission to disable or remove the bomb with instruction from Serizawa on where to look for the nest, Ford executed a H.A.L.O. drop alongside a squad of soldiers. The team is unable to stop the countdown clock the team gets the warhead onto a boat for disposal at sea while Ford destroys the nest which saves Godzilla from the onslaught of the two parasites. The female MUTO nearly kills Ford only for Godzilla to save him by using his atomic breath and Ford quickly evacuates. Godzilla kills the male MUTO, but collapsed when a skyscraper fell on top of him. The two share a glance and Ford quickly makes his way to the harbour.

The female MUTO returns and kills the rest of the team. Ford gets on the boat with the warhead and on an autopilot course out to sea. The MUTO uses an EMP to stop the boat. She prepares to kill Ford only for Godzilla to decapitate her with his atomic breath. The MUTO's death causes the boat's power to be restored and it resumed a course out to sea with the still-ticking warhead onboard. Exhausted, Ford collapsed onto the deck and watched Godzilla similarly collapse on the shoreline. An extraction helicopter discovered the ship and pulled Ford free as the boat continued to carry the warhead out to sea. Ford lost consciousness watching the nuclear warhead explode safely away from the city.

The next day, Ford limped through a stadium in Oakland in a pair of crutches with his son Sam in his company. As other survivors streamed in, they were tearfully reunited with Elle and watched as Godzilla recovered from his injuries and peacefully departed back out to sea.

Although, Ford doesn't appear in the sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, he is referenced with the USS Brody, a navy ship that fights King Ghidorah and Rodan when they attack Washington, D.C.[1] The Brody family name comes from Chief Martin Brody, the main character of Jaws.[2] Ford's first name references Harrison Ford, the actor who director Gareth Edwards and screenwriter Max Borenstein most wanted him to evoke.[3]

Dr. Ishirō Serizawa

[edit]

Ishirō Serizawa is a main protagonist of the 2014 film Godzilla and its sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He is played by Ken Watanabe who also voiced him in the Japanese dub. He also appears in the graphic novels, Godzilla: Awakening and Godzilla: Aftershock

Serizawa was born in 1945, before the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to a Japanese sailor named Eiji and his wife. Eiji found him in the ruins and sent him to Kyoko live with his grandparents for the next several years. Serizawa found out about the history of Godzilla and Monarch in 1980 from Eiji and joined the organisation after Eiji's funeral in 1981.

In 1999, Serizawa and his assistant Vivienne Graham were sent to the Philippines to investigate a collapsed mine. They discover skeleton of a monster similar to Godzilla in a cavern unearthed by a collapsed uranium mine in the Philippines and two giant spores, one dormant and one hatched. The hatched MUTO causes a nuclear accident at Janjira and entered a cocoon-like state, absorbing all the radiation from the surrounding area. For the next 15 years, Serizawa, Graham and other Monarch scientists studied the cocoon until it broke out and destroyed the research facility. The two scientists were taken aboard the USS Saratoga to help the U.S. military, under the command of Admiral Willian Stenz, hunt and destroy the MUTO.

After Godzilla resurfaces, Serizawa correctly theorises that the alpha predator is there to kill the MUTO. After studying the male MUTO's echolocation patterns, he concluded that the parasite was communicating with the female MUTO who broke out of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository. The military plans to kill Godzilla and the MUTOs with a nuclear warhead which Serizawa protests to. After the failure of the plan which results in the male MUTO stealing the warhead, Stenz agrees to let Godzilla handle the MUTOs. After Stenz refocused military efforts to extracting the warhead, Serizawa tells an extraction team that the MUTOs have likely laid eggs underground and are keeping the warhead there.

After the battle, Serizawa and Graham gathered around the seemingly dead body of Godzilla in the ruins of San Francisco. When Godzilla stirred and returned to the ocean, Serizawa looked up in joy as the giant monsters returned to the sea in peace.

After a while, a massive MUTO attacks Guam and has a short battle with Godzilla, Serizawa, Graham and Dr. Emma Russell are sent to investigate. The three scientists find out that the MUTO, Jinshin-Mushi / MUTO Prime is the parent of the two MUTOs and is the one who killed the Godzilla skeleton, Dagon, and was incubating its young within his corpse like a parasite. He, Graham, Emma and Tarkan Cavusgolu witness as Godzilla kills MUTO Prime in Montana.

In 2019, Monarch receives backlash for not killing the Titans. Serizawa, Graham and Monarch's technology director Dr. Sam Coleman are invited to Washington D.C. to speak to Congress about whether Monarch should fall under military jurisdiction. During the meeting, the trio finds out that Emma and her daughter Madison have been abducted by eco-terrorists led by fanatic ex-colonel Alan Jonah, and recruit Emma's ex-wife, Mark, who blames Godzilla for his son's death to help with the rescue mission.

A Monarch teams head to Outpost 32, Antarctica where Emma frees and awakens the three-headed hydra, using a device called the ORCA, Monster Zero who kills several Monarch officials including Graham. It battles and defeats Godzilla and retreats.

The Monarch teams find out from a transmission by Emma that her plan is to awaken all the Titans so they can heal the planet. Emma uses the ORCA to awaken Rodan from Outpost 56, Isla de Mara, Mexico. Rodan destroys the village and fights Monster Zero where he is quickly defeated. The hydra almost destroys the USS Argo which has several Monarch agents, including Serizawa, Mark and Sam only for Godzilla to rescue them. Godzilla gains the upper hand in the water only for the military to use an Oxygen Destroyer against the Titans. Godzilla is presumed dead while Monster Zero emerges unharmed. Monster Zero awakens all the Titans across the world using his alpha roar who begin to attack humanity. Rodan submits to Monster Zero.

Dr. Ilene Chen discovers that Ghidorah is an alien invader who desires to terraform Earth into a suitable habitat by commanding the other Titans. Mothra arrives at Outpost 54, Castle Bravo and the Monarch scientists finds out she is communicating with the still alive Godzilla.

Serizawa, Mark, Dr. Rick Stanton, and Chen decide to revive Godzilla by traveling into the Hollow Earth via the USS Scorpion and detonate a nuclear warhead in his lair. However, the launching mechanism was damaged during the submarine’s crash and the only way to activate the warhead is by hand. Despite the danger of heat and radiation, Serizawa volunteers to detonate the warhead, believing that it's his purpose to revive Godzilla. He passes on his notes and research to Mark before bidding farewell to his colleagues. He approaches Godzilla after activating the warhead. Serizawa places his hand on Godzilla's snout and says his final words, "Goodbye, old friend" in Japanese before the warhead explodes killing him and reviving Godzilla. His sacrifice wouldn't be in vain as Godzilla kills Ghidorah and takes his place as the rightful king of the monsters.

Ishiro Serizawa is named after Daisuke Serizawa from the original 1954 Godzilla film and its director Ishirō Honda[4]
