Name Etymology Refs.
Abbeville Said by locals to derive from the Muscogee name for Abbey Creek, Yatta Abba, meaning "dogwood tree grove". [1]
Alexander City Named in honor of the Confederate general Edward Porter Alexander who was considered a hero by the Confederates for fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg. [2]
Aliceville Named in honor of the wife of John T. Cochrane, founder of the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern Railroad and moving force behind the construction of the short line from Carrollton, Alabama to Aliceville. [3]
Allgood Named after a family of homesteaders from South Carolina who settled in the area in the early 19th century. [4]
