Background
[edit]Following The Story So Far's fourth album, Proper Dose in late-2018, the band had gone five years without new music. However, during fellow pop-punk band blink-182's 2023 World Tour where The Story So Far was a supporting act, they released a new single "Big Blind", in August 2023.[2] Seven months later, they would release "Letterman" as a single, and would also premiere its music video. A subsequent sixth studio album was announced, titled I Want to Dissappear, which was set to be released on June 21, 2024. [3]
Meaning and release
[edit]Unlike the bands' usually intense style, Letterman takes a more emotional and melodic approach.[1] With lyrics like "Wear your pride just like a letterman" and "I know that you're gone and just to accept it", the song explores love or a person that has been lost and is no longer in the person's life. But, the former lyric suggests a sense of pride to hide or mask the pain the singer is feeling inside.[4]
The subsequent music video was released on March 21, 2024, which was directed by Jon Markson. Following the release of the video and song, I Want to Dissappear was announced for June 21, 2024. Later on, the following excerpt from the photobook of the deluxe edition of the album was uncovered by fans: "We spent two months in Europe touring, three weeks, in New Jersey recording and a weekend at home making videos. In this time we were capturing moments not to consciously put them into print, but because it is who we are, We document our life because we are grateful for our friendships and the time we get to spend making and performing, music we love. All of which we owe to you, our fans. Through your support, connection, and patience we have had the pleasure of growing up together. This record is for you. This record is for anyone who has lost someone special.”[5]
