Le360 is a Moroccan online news outlet which publishes in Arabic and French.

History

[edit]

Following its initial establishment in 2013, in 2014 it partnered with the Arabic-language weekly Al Aan, which ceased its activities in November of the same year due to a lack of readership.[1][2]

Ownership and editorial line

Le360 is a subsidiary of the Edit Holding company, which is co-owned at over 80% by Aicha Bouayad, and 20% by Aziz Daki [fr], a confidant of Mounir Majidi, the private secretary of King Mohammed VI.[3][4][5][6] According to Le Monde, Le360 is considered close to the Moroccan establishment (Makhzen), which has attacked journalists critical of the government via sexual harassment claims.[7] Spanish columnist Ignacio Cembrero [es], writing for El Confidencial, described it as a "semi-official" news outlet.[6][8]

Reception

[edit]

Le360 was named by Human Rights Watch[8][6] and the Committee to Protect Journalists[9] as forming part of a "defamation press" seeking to discredit critics of the establishment in Morocco.[10][11]

In 2016, activist Maati Monjib filed a lawsuit against the website in Paris, accusing it of "defamation and false statements" against him and his family. A similar lawsuit for defamation was filed by author Zakaria Moumni at the Tribunal de grande instance de Paris in 2015.[12]
