Laylan camp
[edit]As of 2020[update], more than 7,000 people live in Laylan camp, most of them women and children. The camp was established in 2014 after conflict broke out in several Iraqi towns, including Hawija and Salah Al-Din, forcing many people to flee their homes.
Many of the internally displaced people claim that they cannot leave the camp because they will lose access to electricity and water.[2]
Land dispute
[edit]Farms in the area are the subject of an ownership dispute. Agricultural land owned by Kurdish people prior to the Ba'athist era was given to Arabs and the Kurds were driven away. The Kurds returned to the area in 2003 to reclaim the land, but have been unable to convince the government that they are the rightful owners of the properties.[3]
