Lawrence E. Boone School (founded as Orr Elementary School) is a public elementary school in Washington, D.C. It is named after Lawrence E. Boone, the school's first African American principal, who served from 1970 to 1995[2]. It serves grades Prekindergarten 3 through 5th is under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia Public Schools[3]. The school is located in the Fairlawn neighborhood, at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 22nd Street SE in Washington's Ward 8.

History

Orr Elementary School was built in 1902, and was named after Washington, DC's 4th mayor, Benjamin G. Orr.

In the 2010s, students who attended the school discovered that Orr was a slaveholder. This sparked a years-long campaign to rename the school. In 2018, the school was modernized, and officially renamed Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School[4].

Boone Elementary School participates in the DCIAA's elementary school division, and has the following competitive teams:

In spring of 2024, both the boys and girls outdoor track teams won the city elementary east championship[7].

The school also participates in DC SCORES[8] soccer for boys and girls.
