Kristine Stanley also known as Krissy Stanley, is an Australian comedian, actress and producer known for her eccentricity.[1][2][3] She is best known for appearing on television series Better Homes and Gardens, The Living Room, Bondi Vet, Housos, Darradong Local Council and The Mole among others.[4][5] Stanley is known locally as the 'Bird Lady' by South Sydney residents.[6] For two decades, she has been performing a traveling animal therapy comedy show called ‘Kris Feathered Friends’ in aged care facilities across Australia.[1][4][7][8]
Career
[edit]Stanley started her career as a car saleswoman before featuring on reality TV in the 80's and 90s; she has since featured in a number of television shows as an actress and herself.[5]
Stanley has been running Kris Feathered Friends as a charity show for aged care residents and people in hospitals.[2] She started doing shows with the desire to “put colour and laughter into aged care” due to the loneliness, isolation and mental health epidemic amongst older Australians.[4][9][10] Her shows have a 12-month waitlist and she has performed over 6000 shows.[2] Stanley appeared with Harry Cooper on Better Homes and Gardens, featuring Chicken therapy.[1] Her live bird comedy shows feature non-toxic dyed birds which include Silkie chickens, rescue parrots, Fantail pigeons and rabbits.[1][2] Stanley has also appeared on Bondi Vet and The Living Room with Chris Brown and her birds.[2]
Stanley was featured in 100 Pictures, 100 Stories photo series by Chrissie Hall and Deb Morgan.[11] Her portrait has been entered in the Archibald Prize, National Photographic Portrait Prize and was a semi finalists for the HeadOn photographic Portrait Prize which was displayed at the Sydney Museum.[12]
Produced by Stanley and directed by Thomas Grainger, short documentary film ‘Adventure before Dementia', follows Stanley's work with birds in care homes, eccentricity and hanging out with her friends such as Tziporah Malkah, Christa and Charles Billich.[13][14][15] It was aired at Tropfest and won Best Documentary at the Sanctuary Film Festival.[14]
