Koun Yamamoto (1896–1993) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga genre, active primarily during the Shōwa period. He studied under Takeuchi Seihō, who was regarded as one of the founders of nihonga, who's works spanned half a century and he was regarded as master of the prewar Kyoto circle of painters. His real name was Risaburo Okada, who took on the name Koun Yamamoto as a stage name.[1]
Biography
[edit]Yamamoto was born in 1896 in Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture as the third son of Yamamoto Sadakichi. He graduated from Kyoto Municipal Rokuhara Elementary School and Kyoto Municipal Arts and Crafts School. He also graduated from Kyoto Municipal Painting College. From an early age, he liked painting and later studied under Takeuchi Seiho. He was good at landscape paintings and bird-and-flower paintings, and was particularly good at Arashiyama and sweetfish. He was active in the Teiten and Nitten exhibitions, and received the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award.[1]
Takeuchi Seihō's disciples have produced great painters such as Shoen Uemura, Tsuchida Bakusen, Chikkyo Ono, Kagaku Murakami, Yoson Ikeda, and Shinsen Tokuoka, all of whom have received the Order of Cultural Merit.
Produced the Twelve Flowers and Wood Paintings under the Gengafu. Saiunkai exhibition (final). Since then, he has been teaching Japanese painting classes (Honkokai) at Honnoji Temple and the Japanese painting school at Kurumaori Shrine, and cosponsoring the annual Honnoji Culture and Art Exhibition. He died of heart failure at 9:48 am on June 19, 1993.[2] [3]

[edit]In 1976, Koun Yamamoto received the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan.[2]
Later in his life he returned to more traditional Japanese motifs and painted smaller animals such as cats and fish.
