Ki Ageng Selo (born Ki Ageng Ngabdurahman Sela) was a farmer and spiritual leader who is known as the ancestor of Mataram sultanate kings from Central Java.
Life
[edit]Selo was born Ki Ageng Ngabdurahman Sela in the 16th century in Central Java as the child of Bondan Kejawan.[1] He was the grandson of King Brawijaya.[1] During his youth, Selo registered to join the Demak Kingdom's Private Troops but was rejected because he failed the bull-fighting test.[1] During the test, Selo hit the bull's head until blood spurted, but when the blood spurted, he turned his face away.[1] Because he turned his face away, Selo was considered unable to stand the sight of blood so he was deemed ineligible and rejected.[1] After the rejection, he had a desire to establish his own kingdom.[1] Selo then travelled to a village in the east of Tawangharjo, Grobongan Regency, and became a farmer while studying religion and philosophy.[1]
Living as a farmer made Selo spend a lot of time in the rice fields.[1] One day, he was working, hoeing in the rice field.[1] The sky at that time looked very cloudy and not long after that it rained with lightning flashing.[1] Other farmers who saw the weather at that time then decided to go home because they were afraid.[1] However, it was different with Selo.[1] He continued his work.[1] While he was hoeing, suddenly lightning struck him.[1] Miraculously, the lightning in the form of a dragon was caught by Selo.[1] He then tied the lightning to a Gandrik Tree and then took it to the Sultan of Demak.[1] When taken to the Sultan of Demak, his form changed into a grandfather.[1] The grandfather was then taken and locked up by the Sultan of Demak and shown in the town square.[1] After that, an old woman came closer to the cage where the grandfather was locked up.[1] She poured water from a jug towards the grandfather.[1] Not long after, the sound of thunder was heard and the grandfather and grandmother disappeared.[1]
Sela then established Islamic school and teach students from various regions, including Joko Tingkir, the first sultan of Pajang.[2] He had a son, Ki Ageng Ngenis, and seven daughters, Nyai Ageng Lurung Tengah, Nyai Ageng Saba, Nyai Ageng Basri, Nyai Ageng Jati, Nyai Ageng Patanen, and Nyai Ageng Pakis.[2]
