The Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation is an award.[1] Under the directives of the late His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan with the aim of promoting and encouraging agricultural innovation and studies of date palm research and its spread in the world. The award highlights the responsible leading role of the UAE in advancing creativity and innovation in the field of date palm and the agricultural sector, while also addressing environmental protection issues, fighting poverty, and increasing green areas to achieve sustainable development. Additionally, it supports scientific research and appreciates the efforts of those working to develop the agricultural sector and date palm industry, both in the UAE and globally.
The award is divided into five categories in the field of agricultural innovation and date palm: The first category, Distinguished Studies and Modern Technology,[2] awards the winner one million UAE dirhams (about $300,000). The second category, Pioneering Development and Production Projects, also awards one million UAE dirhams (about $300,000) to the winner. The third category, Distinguished Producers, Manufacturers, and Marketers, provides a prize of 750,000 UAE dirhams (about $200,000). The fourth category, Pioneering and Advanced Innovations in the Agricultural Sector, awards 750,000 UAE dirhams (about $200,000). The fifth category, Distinguished Personality in the Field of Palms, Dates, and Agricultural Innovation, also awards 750,000 UAE dirhams (about $200,000).[3] The award administration grants a commemorative shield and a certificate of appreciation to winners in all categories.[4]
The period for submitting candidacy applications is from June 1 to December 31 of each year. The names of the winners are announced during the second week of February, and the honoring ceremony takes place during the second week of March each year.
Award's Activities
[edit]The Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation is the organizing body behind the International Date Palm Conference,[5] along with several other prominent festivals. They hosted eight sessions of the Emirates International Date Palm Festival in Al Ain from 2004 to 2014 and continued their efforts with the Abu Dhabi International Date Palm Exhibition, which held eight sessions from 2015 to 2022. Their reach extended globally, organizing the International Festival of Egyptian Dates[6] from 2015 to 2018 and again in 2022, the International Sudanese Dates Festival[7] from 2017 to 2019 and in 2022, and the International Festival of Jordanian Dates[8] from 2018 to 2019 and in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, in 2022, they organized the International Festival of Mauritanian Dates and the International Mexican Dates Festival.[9] This year, 2024, they will also organize the International Pakistani Dates Festival.[10]
