Katsushi Ikeuchi is a Japanese computer scientist.

Biography

He was born in Osaka Prefecture. He earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kyoto University and his PhD degree in Information Engineering at the University of Tokyo. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Graph description principle based on image processing by human"[1], focused on modeling the process of human kanji recognition. Through this model, he predicted a decrease in reading errors when kanji characters are presented briefly and validated the model.

After earning his doctorate, he promptly relocated to the United States to commence his postdoctoral research position at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Later, he returned to Japan to work at the Electrotechnical Laboratory (now known as the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) before heading back to the United States again. Subsequently, he became a research professor at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. Following this, he assumed a professorship at the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo. Eventually, he transitioned to Microsoft as a research manager.

At the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, he delved into developing algorithms aimed at extracting depth information from single images using variations in shading, a technique commonly referred to as shape-from-shading. His groundbreaking work with Prof. B.K.P. Horn introduced the smoothness constraint, which eventually evolved into a regularization term crucial for solving various vision-related challenges, marking a significant advancement in the field[2]. Concurrently, he endeavored to extend the application of these shape-from-shading methods to robotics. Prof. Horn and he contributed to the development of a bin-picking system, further showcasing the versatility and potential impact of his research[3].

At the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, he focused on developing robots capable of acquiring behaviors from human demonstrations, as the Learning-from-Observation project initiated by him with the support from Prof. Raj Reddy[4]. Later, at the University of Tokyo, he applied this learning-from-observation technique to instruct a humanoid robot in performing Aizu Bandaisan dance[5] as well as knot-tying and machine-part-assembly. He also pioneered Modeling-from-Reality techniques, which led to the acquisition of three-dimensional digital data of various cultural heritage including the Angkor Thom temple complex[6]. He acquired digital data of the Kyushu Decorative Tomb Group and demonstrated the practicality of these digital data of cultural heritage to archaeological research with naming the field as cyber-archaeology[7].

He served as Program Chair for the conferences such as CVPR1996, ICCV2003, ICRA2009, ICCV2015, and as General Chair for the conferences including IROS1995, ITSC1999, ICCV2007, and ICCV2017. Additionally, he held editorial roles such as Editor-in-Chief for journals like IJCV.
