Draft:Kansas Central Railroad

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kansas Central Railroad was a 3ft narrow gauge railroad operating in the US state of Kansas from 1871 to 1897. Founded by businessmen from the city of Leavenworth, KS who were seeking to surpass Kansas City as the primary trading hub on the Missouri River, the railroad was planned to run westward across Kansas to Denver, Colorado, where a connection with the then narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande Railroad would be made. Due to economic depression and the majority of its traffic being seasonal agricultural goods, the railroad never achieved profitability and was taken over by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1897.
