From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The village of "kafar matta" or "kfar-matta" as it is pronounced in Lebanese mountainous accent or "كفرمتى" in arabic, is a beautiful mountainous Druze and Christian village located in mount Lebanon governorate in the "Gharb" mountains of "aley" district, it is the largest village by land in the "gharb" district, it spans a massive distance bordering the village of "jisr-al-qadi" in "chouf" district and reaching the highlands of "damour" village in the southern shores of mount Lebanon governorate.

It is both demographically and geographically diverse, geographically it has areas in it's highlands reaching 950 meters above sea level (these areas are shrubby and not densely forested due to the snow it receives in winter). At it's low points, kfarmatta has a river passing through it called the "safa" river, this river boosts the biodiversity found in kfarmatta both aquaticly and by land. These low point are densely forested with wild animals such as wild boars, foxes, jackals, and a lot of other animals like turtles tortoises, lizards, chameleons, and an array of Mediterranean insects. Its demographic diversity is also amazing, it has both Druze and Christian villagers living side by side like they used to for hundreds and thousands of years, it has two churches one near the famous forest reserve of kfarmatta for the Roman or Greek Orthodox Christian community called church of St.Georges, and another church near the "habanjar" area of kfarmatta called church of St.Elias for the Maronite catholic community. Kfarmatta also has two main "khalwas"/"majalis" which are temples or prayer halls of the Druze community, one for the family of "khaddaj" and one for the family of "Al Ghariib", although there are other "khalwas" in kfarmatta for other families, these two are the most public ones. There are also a number of different Druze monk shrines in kfarmatta, like the shrines of "sheikh/monk Zayn-al-dine", "sheikh Mostafa" and a few other private shrines.

Due to the past mountain wars that occured between Druze and Christians tension built up for years in the past, but in our modern world today, druze and Christians live side by side like siblings, there isn't any form of tension and love won the hearts of both communities. Just like how they where 800 years ago when they worked side by side in the largest silk mill/factory in Lebanon in the middle of kfarmatta, after it was abandoned due to the Turks creating the famine and massacres of druze and Christians of mount Lebanon, 1915.

Kfarmatta also has a geological almost god holy natural rock formation, it is a crack in the mountains almost reassembling a canyon through a mountain which hikers adore because it is the only way to reaching the river of kfarmatta.

We cannot forget the twinning kfarmatta achieved with the beautiful Italian village of Martignano, this twinning helped kfarmatta build it's glorious town hall, and it's one of a kind modern oil press, because kfarmatta even before this modern oil press, had around 10 ancient rock oil presses that's why historically kfarmatta is known as the capital of olive oil in it's region. All in all, kfarmatta is a beautiful Lebanese mountainous village and is a historical and natural gem of lebanon.
