Juliantina is a Mexican "special edition"[1] mini television series starring Macarena Achaga and Bárbara López, written by Leonardo Padrón and Carlos Eloy Castro and produced by Televisa.[2] It was released on November 8, 2019.[3]
The mini series is a portmanteau and the ship name of the protagonists, Valentina Carvajal (Macarena Achaga) and Juliana Valdés (Bárbara López),[4] whose original portrayal in Love to Death became the "juggernaut pairing" of the show,[5] despite being a tertiary couple.[6]
Synopsis
[edit]The mini series is a remastered version of "Juliantina" scenes and overarching plot-relevant storylines from the Mexican telenovela Love to Death,[1] which includes the release of previously censored scenes.[7]
It follows the story of Valentina (Macarena Achaga), the youngest child of the wealthy and powerful media conglomerate Carvajal family, and Juliana Valdés (Bárbara López), a Texan-born daughter of a hired assassin, "El Chino", from their first encounter, becoming close friends to eventually falling in love.

1 | "Two Years Ago (Dos años atras)" | 8 November 2019 | 37:09
Juliana notices Valentina as they cross paths on the street. Later, Valentina and her boyfriend, Lucho, argue when he grows frustrated with her constant mentions of her father’s recent death. Watching from afar, Juliana sees Lucho storm off, leaving Valentina alone. In the park, Valentina sits drinking from a flask, overwhelmed by grief. A flashback reveals her father, León Carvajal, was murdered at his own wedding reception. Valentina begins to sob, and Juliana approaches, offering a listening ear. The two bond over burgers, but Valentina suddenly leaves. Back at university, Lucho apologizes, and they reconcile. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to either of them, León’s spirit has been reincarnated into the body of Juliana’s assassin father, "El Chino" Valdez, moments after his execution via electric chair — witnessed by Juliana and her mother, Lupita. Now resurrected in El Chino's body and posing as "Jacobo Reyes", one of the family's drivers, León is unknowingly drawn back into Valentina’s life. The episode ends with a drunk Valentina falling into her family’s pool — only to be saved by her father, in his new body, watching over her.
2 | "All Men Are Annoying! (Todos los hombres son de flojera!)" | 8 November 2019 | 34:59
After her drunken fall into the pool, Valentina is comforted by her brother Guillermo, who gives her a book on reincarnation, "Death is Just a Portal". Valentina dismisses it as a favor their father did for his best friend and the author of the book, Camilo Guerra, but Guille urges her to give it a chance. Reluctantly, Valentina begins reading, her curiosity about reincarnation slowly growing. While running errands with Jacobo, Valentina spots Juliana and invites her for coffee. They bond over shared interests, that "All Men Are Annoying!", and over both having lost their fathers. Later, Valentina visits Camilo to discuss reincarnation, where it’s revealed that Camilo recommended “Jacobo” for the driver job with her family. The episode ends with Valentina calling Juliana to invite her over to her house.
3 | "Imperfect Meeting (Cita Imperfecta)" | 8 November 2019 | 38:05
Juliana arrives at the Carvajal estate, where she and Valentina grow closer. Valentina discovers Juliana can’t swim and offers to teach her. Their pool time is cut short by the arrival of Lucho and his friend Sergio. Surprised, Valentina argues with Lucho, and him and Sergio leave. In Valentina’s room, the girls spontaneously give each other gifts. Juliana gives Valentina a handmade dress, while Valentina gifts her a necklace and one of her own dresses. Meanwhile, "Jacobo" (León) and León’s new wife, Lucia, are kidnapped. Lucho returns to comfort Valentina, and Juliana learns about the kidnapping on the news, immediately calling Val to support her. When Lucho questions Valentina for sharing family matters with a “stranger,” Val defends Juliana, calling her a trusted friend. Val turns down Lucho’s offer to stay the night, but when she can’t sleep, she calls Juliana, who soothes her with a story until she drifts off. The next morning, Valentina plans to pick Juliana up, but her sister Eva stops her from leaving, so Juliana returns to the compound instead. Lucho reappears, complaining about Valentina’s growing distance. Val explains she has a “girls day” planned with Juliana, but Lucho crashes their plans, bringing Sergio along. The group watches a movie, but tensions flare when Lucho and Valentina fight over the remote. Lucho relents, snidely adding, “only because your stepmother was kidnapped.” Offended, Valentina storms off to her room, taking Juliana with her.
4 | "I've Never Been In Love (Nunca he estado enamorada)" | 8 November 2019 | 35:38
In Valentina’s room, she and Juliana bond over boys, dating, and sex. Juliana admits she’s a virgin, while Val confesses: "I've Never Been In Love". Their moment is interrupted when Lucho bursts in with news — Lucia has been freed. Juliana and Sergio leave to give the family privacy as Lucia returns home. On the way, Juliana regrets leaving without saying goodbye. When Sergio dismisses Valentina as someone who’ll seek her out “when she’s bored,” Juliana disagrees. Avoiding further conversation, she avoids giving him her number when he drops her off. At home, two men show up looking for El Chino, leaving Juliana unsettled. Later, while crying in her room, she gets a call from Valentina, who asks her why she left without saying goodbye. Juliana explains she took Sergio’s ride to give Val’s family space. Val teases her about having a crush on Sergio, but Juliana denies it. Sensing something deeper, Valentina presses gently, and Juliana mentions family trouble but doesn’t want to burden her. Val reassures her: she’s there for her. Valentina shows up at Juliana’s house with a surprise — a cake. At university, Sergio asks Valentina for Juliana’s number, then they find her selling lottery tickets on the street. The group — Valentina, Juliana, Sergio, and Lucho —grabs lunch together. Afterward, they invite Juliana to a party, but she declines, not feeling it’s her scene. Valentina offers an alternative: they’ll hang out instead. As Lucho and Sergio head to the party, Valentina and Juliana opt for a quiet walk in the park.
5 | "Learning To Dance (Aprendiendo a bailar)" | 8 November 2019 | 37:48
Valentina and Juliana ride a tandem bike, speeding up to lose Val’s security team. They stumble upon a public dance class in the park, where Juliana jumps in confidently, leaving Valentina in awe. When Val asks Juliana to teach her to dance — since Val’s teaching her to swim — they slow dance together, sharing a sweet moment. At home, an excited Val gushes to Guillermo about "Learning To Dance" from Juliana. Their conversation is interrupted by a drunken call from Lucho, who threatens Valentina. The next day, Juliana visits a school for a design course that Valentina recommended. At university, tensions flare when Lucho confronts Val about spending so much time with Juliana. On a walk, Juliana tells Val about her visit to the school but admits she won’t enroll — it’s too expensive. When Valentina suggests getting her a scholarship through her family’s company, Juliana refuses, insisting she’ll attend a school she can afford on her own, not out of pity. Frustrated, Juliana storms off. Later, Juliana goes to Valentina’s house to apologize but is turned away by security for not being on the visitor list. She calls Val repeatedly, but Val — unaware — ignores the calls while swimming. That night, Valentina drinks with her university friend Nayeli and impulsively calls Lucho over. They have sex, but once sober, Val realizes Juliana called and immediately rings her back. She apologizes, confessing how much Juliana means to her and that she doesn’t want to lose her. Lucho, overhearing, grows suspicious and angrily mimics Valentina, accusing her of neglecting their relationship. Val accuses him of being jealous of Juliana and kicks him out. The next day, Valentina and Juliana meet up, reconcile, and Val invites her to Guille’s intimate birthday celebrations that evening. The two go shopping for a dress, which Valentina insists on buying for her.
6 | "The Party (La fiesta)" | 8 November 2019 | 34:27
Juliana arrives at the Carvajal estate for Guillermo’s birthday, stunning Valentina with her beauty. Val admits the small gathering has spiraled into a full-blown party, orchestrated by Lucho, who invited himself. At the party, Lucho pushes Sergio to dance with Juliana so he can “finally spend some time with Valentina". While they bicker, Lucho offers Valentina a pill. Meanwhile, Sergio hits on Juliana, who swerves by asking him to tell her about Valentina and Lucho. Sergio reveals their on-and-off relationship dynamic. In the hallway, Valentina suggests Juliana loosen up and asks her to close her eyes, slipping a pill into her mouth. Juliana spits it out when Eva appears, scolding Valentina for the out-of-control party. Juliana steps in, assuring Eva she’s sober and will look after Val. Back at the party, Lucho and Sergio propose heading to an after-party. When Juliana protests that they’re already having fun, Lucho snaps that no one cares if she comes or not. A drunk Valentina jumps to Juliana’s defense, but Lucho insults her further before storming off with Sergio. Juls apologizes to Val, not wanting to cause a fight, and admits she thinks Lucho hates her. Val brushes it off, offering to have Jacobo drive Juliana home. However, Jacobo — realizing Juliana might recognize him — fakes a phone call to avoid the encounter. Silvina breaks up the party, and while waiting for another driver, Valentina invites Juliana to her room to practice dancing. The two share an intimate moment and almost kiss — until Guillermo interrupts. With no drivers available, Juliana agrees to sleep over. The next day, Valentina can’t stop thinking about Juliana: the almost-kiss, waking up next to her, and the way she makes her feel. She struggles to snap herself out of it. Meanwhile, Lupita finds herself in a dangerous situation with men desperately looking for El Chino.
7 | "No One Is Going To Keep Me Away From You (Nadie me va a alejar de ti)" | 8 November 2019 | 39:07
Valentina meets Juliana to share an exciting opportunity — a scholarship at a school run by a designer who is Guillermo’s godmother and a close friend of their late mother. Together, they meet with her, but their plans are interrupted when Juliana learns that Lupita has been kidnapped. Juliana receives a chilling call from the kidnappers, giving her 48 hours to publish a message in the news to lure El Chino out in exchange for Lupita’s safety. Valentina discovers Juliana lied about her father being dead. Juliana confesses that her father is an assassin who miraculously revived after his execution in the electric chair. Valentina forgives her and agrees to help by using her family’s company to publish the kidnappers’ demand. Later, Valentina visits Juliana, trying to lift her spirits by suggesting reincarnation as a possible explanation for what happened to her father. Their conversation is interrupted by Inspector Montilla, who questions Juliana about El Chino’s whereabouts. When Juliana leaves the room, Montilla discreetly warns Valentina to stay away from her for her own safety and her family’s reputation. After he leaves, Juliana asks what Montilla said. Valentina tells her, but quickly dismisses his advice, declaring: “No One Is Going To Keep Me Away From You.” To distract Juliana, Valentina invites her to join her at university for the day. There, they encounter Lucho, who hurls insults at Juliana, telling her to “get her own life.” While Valentina fights with him, Juliana walks off. Valentina chases after her, begging her not to pull away, and suggests they leave together. They head to the Carvajal estate.

[edit]Background
[edit]The original portrayal of the "Juliantina" couple on Love to Death is the first Queer couple to appear in a Mexican telenovela,[8] receiving widespread support by queer fans worldwide. Fans began tweeting the hashtag #liberalasbardasano (English translation: #ReleaseThemBardasano) directed at Love to Death's executive producer Carlos Bardasano (later also executive producer of Juliantina) to release censored kissing scenes, and eventually as part of a campaign to see a Juliantina-centered spin-off.[9]
In 2019, following the completion of Love to Death, a petition for a Juliantina spin-off gathered over 55,000 signatures within a month.[10] One fan even funded a Times Square ad campaign urging for the series to be produced.[11] In response to the extensive domestic and international support from dedicated fans, the mini series was released.[7][11]
Impact
[edit]Fandom
[edit]Journalist Kira Mackenzie Deshler observed that Juliantina fans attribute their deep connection to the couple to what Ien Ang describes as “emotional realism”[12]. Deshler goes on to explain that this concept reflects either the relatability—"I have felt or experienced those emotions" — or the aspirational quality — "I haven’t experienced that, but I would like to someday" — sparked by the portrayal.[13]
Following the release of the mini series, "Juliantina" became the third most reblogged couple on Tumblr in 2019.[14]
