Mzee Joseph Ngala Katana (born 1936) in Frere Town Mombasa, Kenya. He is a musician and composer. He lives in an old Swahili house built in the 1960s at Frere Town in Mombasa.[1]
Career
[edit]Mzee Ngala's musical career commenced in the late 1950s when he was exposed to the flute; thereafter, he became a composer of popular Kiswahili ballads. His genre is a synthesis of ancient Giriama rhythms, soft rhumba beats, and nuanced contemporary afro-jazz influences.[2] He has composed multiple wedding lyrics, the inaugural one being in 1958 for a relative's nuptials.His non-wedding songs that have garnered him acclaim include: Shauri Moyo, Mashaka, Mambo Yako ni Payapaya, Nitachonga Sanamu, Debe Tu, and Pepeta Bango.[1][3]
