Joseph G. McCarthy (born November 28, 1938) is an American plastic surgeon known for his innovative contributions to facial surgery, his advocacy on behalf of patients with facial differences and his training of many outstanding plastic surgeons. He served as Chief of Plastic Surgery for over 30 years at the NYU Langone Medical Center. He is a Clinical Professor and Professor Emeritus at the Hansjorg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine[1]. His research focus is in Craniofacial Distraction[2]. Such work not only improves physical appearance but also people's lives and opportunities[3] Craniofacial surgery patients typically undergo surgery to improve their quality of life, both in their ability to breathe or eat but to assimilate socially.[4]

Early Life and Education

Joseph G. McCarthy was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on Nov. 28, 1938, the son of Joseph H. and Eva C. McCarthy. He was the third child in a family of six children. He attended local schools and graduated from Lowell High School where he was the Class Valedictorian and Carney Scholar.

McCarthy graduated with a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1960. He received his MD from the College of Physicians, Columbia University in 1964 where he was President of the VP&S Club[5] and won the Joseph Garrison Parker Award[6] [7].


He was Medical Director for the development of CIVA Pro[8], the Craniofacial Interactive Virtual Assistant. CIVA provides a cloud-based educational tool that interactively showcases common craniofacial operations to provide information to patients.

2007 Clinical Excellence Honoree and "Top Doctor" at the National Physician of the Year Awards held in Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. National Physician of the Year Awards at The Pierre on March 13, 2007 in New York City[11]

Originally certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) May 10, 1974[12].

Oversaw the training of 125 residents in Plastic surgery and 35 craniofacial surgery fellows[13] including Douglas A. Roth MD and Wendy-Ann Olivier MD[14]. [15][16]



At NYU Langone Health Dr. McCarthy directed the multidisciplinary myFace Craniofacial Center from 1974 to 2013. The Center brought together specialists in ophthalmic plastic surgery, ear reconstruction, cleft repair and pediatric craniofacial surgery[17]. He is an honorary trustee of the organization[18].

He was instrumental in the founding of Smile Train and was the Founder Chair of the Medical Advisory Board[19]. Dr. McCarthy was the progenitor of Doctor Radio, a Sirius satellite channel broadcasting a full range of medical topics[20].
