John Awuah
[edit]John Awuah is a Ghanaian born to Mr John Yaw Awuah, a mechanic (now deceased) and Madam Hannah Owusu, a petty trader from Abuakwa[1] in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was born on February 6, 1974 in Oforikrom, a suburb of Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana. He had his primary education at Mizpah Preparatory School[2], where he was among the first pupils to complete the school in 1987. He proceeded to Osei Tutu Secondary School[3], Akropong in the Ashanti Region for his Ordinary Level education and then to Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School, also in Ashanti Region for his Advanced Level Certificate Examinations.

[edit]in 1996, John Awuah, having stayed at home for one year due to strike by University Lecturers that prevented admissions to any of the universities in Ghana, finally got admission to pursue BA Admin degree from the University of Ghana. After a little over a month at the University of Ghana, Legon, John left to take up admission to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana. He completed the programme in 1999 with a first class honours degree from the University.
John is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK) with several years post qualification and many years of relevant senior executive experience. He holds Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Coast (Ghana) with first class honours. MBA (with merit) from Oxford Brookes University[4], UK and several years of progressively responsible work experience including Corporate Strategy, Balance sheet management, Client relationship management, Financial Control, Regulatory Reporting, Credit Control, Taxation, Financial Accounting, Business Partnering and Business Analytics. As the Chief Executive Officer of Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), John transformed the bank from a loss-making Institution into profitability within one year of assuming the role. As the Chief Finance Officer of GCB Bank[5], John was instrumental in the ongoing Corporate turn-around and Institutional transformation of the Bank. Before joining GCB Bank, He was the Group Chief Finance Officer of Ecobank Capital (Ecobank Development Corporation) where he had oversight responsibility for the Finance Functions of seven countries and spearheaded relationship with Regulators and Corporate Strategy in the Investment Banking arm of the Ecobank Group. As the Head of Finance of United Bank for Africa Ghana Ltd (UBA), John spearheaded the set-up and operations of the finance function of the bank and led the bank’s branch rollout strategy. As Financial Controller of Barclays Bank of Ghana, John played a key role in the successful corporate turnaround of the bank; migrating it from a loss making entity in 2008 to the number one bank (in terms of profitability) in 2011. John is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks[6] where he is pursuing a process of redefining the role of the Institution. He has since assuming the role lifted the profile of the organisation with his thought leadership driven initiatives.
