Jazba is an (Urdu: جذبہ) Urdu band created in Karachi in 1990. They achieved critical and international fame with their own style of music they dubbed ‘Raga Rap’. They gained popularity through the use of New Age sound, philosophical and often societal issues. The band consisted of Zulfiqar Khan (Keyboardist), Nadeem Nasir (Vocals), Asif Ahmed (Guitars) and Andrew Chang (Bass). Their first hit single, Jago, set a record for being on the Music Channel Charts No. 1 slot for eight consecutive weeks which was a record for that particular show. Their first album Tarikhi Waqiya was released in 1996. Jazba remained in the number one spot of the Pakistani Music Channel Charts for 16 weeks, a record still unbroken by their songs which targeted nepotism, violence, women's rights and other societal issues plaguing society.
Formation
[edit]The year was 1990 when Aer Rianta opened its first duty free shop in Pakistan in the new Jinnah Terminal at Karachi. The company started interviews for the sales staff manning the shops. It was at this time that Zulfiqar, Asif and Nadeem, after being selected, met for the training session on how to be a salesperson. Andrew was already working on the renovations in the shops. The training was 5 days. On the first day, during a break in the training, someone asked about everyone's listening habits. Turned out, all three shared the same taste in music. They hit it right off.
It was at next day's meeting that these three pulled aside during a break and discovered another amazing fact: Not only both Zulfiqar and Nadeem were self taught keyboardists, they actually got their love of keyboards from a Casio VL-1 calculator/keyboard on which they practiced as kids.
Having desired a band of his own, Zulfiqar after a couple of months, asked both Nadeem and Asif if they wanted to join a band. The answer was a unanimous yes. Jazba at that point, had been born, albeit, without a name.
Choosing the name
[edit]Now that the band was formed next on the agenda was a name to go with the band. After a couple of months, the trio decided to meet at Zulfiqar's house. There, Zulfiqar, Nadeem, Asif and Zulfiqar's elder sister broke out the Urdu dictionary Farhang-e-Aasfiya. A lot of laughs were had at that point. One word that got the most laugh was Saiqal "صیقل". Since the newly formed band was out to change the music industry, the word meant change, renewal and rebirth. Zulfiqar's sister suggested that all the band members would then need to appear on stage riding bicycles.
One desire was to reflect a name that inspired greatness and passion. A lot of ideas were tossed around, but none of them 'rolled off the tongue', as Zulfiqar put it. So, after 5 of the most inspiring names were chosen, they were written on paper and tossed in a flower vase. Whatever name would be drawn, would be selected as the moniker of the newly formed band. It is a matter of debate after all these years who really wrote 'Jazba', but it was Jazba that was drawn.
Formative year
[edit]Zulfiqar and Nadeem were both self-taught musicians and had a bevy of songs ready to be put to music, Asif and Andrew, on the other hand, were devoid of any musical talent or ability. Andrew, who was supposed to be the bassist, left 6 months after the formation of the band and Asif decided to take on the mantle of playing bass. After practicing days and nights, his hard work paid off and he became a formidable bassist in about a month.
The idea to include non-musicians in a musical band, was that once the band was formed, Andrew and Asif would learn their instruments in the meantime, the band would hire session guitarists to fulfill the place of a lead guitarist.
