Jan Kwiecinski (1938–2003)[1] was a Polish physicist, known mainly for his contributions to quantum chromodynamics.[1] Kwiecinski was a professor of physics with expertise in theoretical particle physics, theoretical high-energy nuclear physics. Kwiecinski was alos a correspondent member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.[2]
Early life
[edit]Jan Kwiecinski was born in Cracow January 19, 1938.[1] Kwiecinski graduated from the High School in Chorzow, the State School of Music in Chorzow and Katowice (piano class). In 1955 through 1960, he studied theoretical physics at the Jagiellonian University. After graduation, he worked at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow.[1] He was the head of the Theoretical Physics Division and was the founder of Krakow's "low-x" (where x is the part of the hadron's longitudinal momentum that a gluon or quark carries) physics group.[2][3]
Career
[edit]His research was focused on the phenomenology of quantum chromodynamics in the high energy limit. He wrote several seminal publications on the theoretical aspects of quantum chromodynamics. He derived an equation known as BKP (Bartels Kwiecinski Prashalovich), which is a generalization of the BFKL (Balitski Fadin Kuraev Lipatov) equation. The BKP equation describes the evolution and exchange in the collision process of hadrons of a multi-gluon system. He also dealt with the problem of saturation of gluons. He was one of the authors of a paper in which a new type of scaling was observed, the so-called geometric scaling in proton structure function data. This type of scaling can be considered as potential signal for saturation effects.
