Sir James Lockhart (1565-1633) was a scottish noble and landowner. Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland by parents James Lockhart VIIIth of Lee and Janet Hamilton. He was given the lands of Stanebyres, Auchinleck, Gilbank, Greenrigg, Kers by James VI of Scotland. In 1607 he had gotten seats in the Scottish Parliament and the Barony of, Fullwood, Castlehill, Margeland, Meikle, Little Barrochers, Birkenhead, and Wester Nymphlar , representing Lanarkshire. In 1612 James was granted the title of Baron of Carstairs, Lanarkshire. After a few years, the King of Scotland now also the King of England, James I of England granted James and his family other lands in Melvine and Bellstane.

Lockhart Family
[edit]In 1645, James grandson William Lockhart of Lee married Robina Swester, the granddaughter of Robert Cromwell, and the cousin of Oliver Cromwell. This gave good influence to the Lockhart family, since the Cromwell family was also related to more powerful families like the House of Tudor, and the House of Woodville and Thomas Cromwell, the Earl of Essex.
