Jake, Reinvented is a 2003 novel by Gordon Korman.
Synopsis
[edit]The life of Jake, a teenage boy, is turned upside down when his father suddenly moves him to a new school. Jake struggles to fit in at his new school and is soon labeled the class clown. However, he soon discovers that being the class clown has its advantages. He finds ways to get out of tests and assignments and even gets away with some pranks. He also begins to make friends and even finds a few enemies along the way. By the end of the novel, Jake has reinvented himself and gained acceptance from his peers. He has learned to take risks and stand up for himself. Ultimately, Jake has gone from being the class clown to a successful and confident young man.
Themes
[edit]Jake, Reinvented is a reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby set in U.S. high school. The characters of Jake Garrett, Didi, and Todd Buckley are respective stand-ins for Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan.[1]
Reception
[edit]The staff of Publishers Weekly called Jake, Reinvented a "smart novel", but wrote that "a final chapter tacks on a happy ending and somewhat dulls the story's impact."[1]
