Jadd Hashem is a Palestinian-American peace activist, student, and Vice President/Head of Palestinian Dialogue of Atidna International. He is also on the Board of Directors of Roots – Judur – Shorashim.
Early life and education
[edit]Jadd Hashem was born in Dallas, Texas, and he is of Palestinian descent. Hashem’s father was born and raised in Nablus, Palestine.[1] Hashem has distant family members affected by the war in Gaza, and they have escaped Gaza for Egypt and the West Bank. He also has family still living in Nablus.[1]
Hashem attended Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, Texas, and currently attends the University of Texas at Austin[2]. Hashem is an undergraduate student majoring in government and minoring in Middle Eastern studies.[1]
Activism and Views
[edit]Hashem has made statements in support of peace and nonviolence in Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has called called for both Palestinians and Israelis to denounce all forms of terrorism, and he believes that Jews and Arabs must emphasize unity and a common identity.[3]
Hashem and Elijah Kahlenberg planed a joint vigil at UT Austin to commemorate all innocent lives lost in Israel and Palestine during the Israel-Hamas War. According to Hashem, the vigil was emotional and peaceful.[4] According to Hashem, dialogue between Jews and Arabs is critical to achieve peace in Israel and Palestine.[3]
Later, in April 2024, Hashem and Kahlenberg set up a table between Texas Hillel’s annual Israel Block Party at the UT Austin and a protest of the event organized by the Palestinian Solidarity Committee. They had a sign taped in front of their table that read: “One Palestinian. One Jew. Two Brothers. Ask us anything.”[5]
When asked by Byron Pitts whether one can be "pro-Israeli" and "pro-Palestinian", Hashem responded that it is important to be “pro-human being.” He stated that human rights “must extend to everybody on an equal level.”[3] In addition, Hashem has criticized what the treatment of Palestinians by Israel. He has stated that the "map tells a story...[Israel] failed on delivering equal dignity for all people. When I refer to the map, I think about the villages of Palestinians hundreds of years ago, who now have been destroyed or people who had to move.”[6]
Hashem has condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7. In addition, he has criticized Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and accused Israel of numerous war crimes under international humanitarian law.[7]
In addition to criticism of Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Hashem has criticized UT Austin’s responses to the Israel-Hamas war. He claims the university has been silent about the suffering of Palestinians, and that University officials have only made efforts to protect Israeli and Jewish voices.[8]
