The IZH-27175 is a light utility van and pickup truck developed by the Russian automaker IzhAvto, often used for small cargo and utility transport. Based on the IZH-2717 series, which began production in the 1990s, the IZH-27175 is known for its simplicity, durability, and affordability, making it a popular choice in Russia and other post-Soviet states. This model often incorporates parts from the Lada 2104 station wagon, giving it a familiar look, especially in the front grille and dashboard area.

IzhAvto's Foundation: The company that produced the IZH-27175, IzhAvto (formerly known as Izhevsk Mechanical Plant), was founded in the 1960s. Initially, it was more famous for making firearms and later expanded into automobiles as part of the USSR’s effort to meet the demand for utility vehicles. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Russian automakers like IzhAvto shifted to meet the needs of the newly privatized civilian market. The IZH-2717 series, introduced in the early 1990s, reflected this shift and was based on a combination of components from previous Soviet cars and the Lada 2104. Soon the IzhAvto decided to further upgrade the IZH-2717 by integrating more components from the Lada 2104, creating the IZH-27175 model. This change aimed to improve the availability of parts, as Lada’s presence was well-established in Russia.

Versions

The IZH-27175 came in several practical versions, each catering to different utility needs. The main versions:

  • Cargo Van Version: his was the standard version of the IZH-27175, designed as a closed cargo van. It had a spacious rear compartment, ideal for transporting goods, tools, and equipment.
  • Pickup Truck Version: This version had an open rear cargo bed, similar to a traditional pickup truck, allowing for more versatile transport of larger or irregularly shaped items.
  • Passenger-Cargo Hybrid Version (or "Combi"): This version combined passenger seating in the front with a smaller cargo area in the rear, making it a hybrid between a van and a family vehicle.

Also there was Specialized Commercial Versions:

  • Ambulance and Service Van Variants: In some cases, the IZH-27175 was modified for specific commercial or service purposes, such as mobile repair units or ambulances. These versions often included additional interior fittings, such as shelving or medical equipment
  • Customization: Some state enterprises and service providers customized the IZH-27175 to serve as mobile workshops, utility service vehicles, or basic emergency transport.

Decline and End of Production

As the Russian automotive market opened up to foreign manufacturers, competition increased. Vehicles with more advanced technology and safety features became available, causing a decline in demand for the IZH-27175. By the early 2010s, IzhAvto was struggling financially and ultimately ceased production of the IZH-27175 as the market moved on to more modern vehicles.
