Isaac Thiel (12 October 1896 - 28 April 1918) was a German painter who is best known for his 1918 work Ennui.[1]
Life
[edit]After being sent off to a monastery in Switzerland for most of his adolescence, Thiel's parents forced him to return to the city to finish his studies. Many of his best works were painted during this period, as he joined up with the budding Expressionism movement, which was in its infancy[2] during his stay at Hamburg University.
Thiel often expressed dissatisfaction with life in Hamburg and feelings of nostalgia for the mountains, entering a final deep depression in 1918. Thiel committed suicide on April 28th of that year, leaving no note behind. Ennui was completed a week before his death--the dots in the painting are said to represent stars, specifically those Thiel would have seen as a child in the Alps. The last time the painting was seen before his death the red dots of the final version were absent, leading some to suggest that they were droplets of Thiel's own blood.[3]
