Isaac Hong (Korean: 홍이삭; born 12 May 1988), is a Korean singer-songwriter, producer, and entertainer. Isaac is best known for winning JTBC's show Sing Again 3, his appearance in JTBC's first season of Superband (TV program) and for singing the track ‘Fallin’ from the Queen of Tears OST.
Early life and education
[edit]Both of Isaac Hong's parents are missionaries,[4] which led to him learning English while attending an international elementary school in Papua New Guinea for three and a half years.[5] This period of Isaac's life had an impact on the music he later produced, as he stated: "Learning music at church from a young age has had a significant influence...This was during my time in Papua New Guinea".[6]
In 2007, Isaac entered Handong Global University to study Journalism and Information studies. He was a part of the university's song writing club, NEO.[7] In 2009, he dropped out of Handong Global University and chose to attend Berklee College of Music, majoring in Music Education.[8] He attended the university for three semesters starting in 2010, before taking a leave of absence due to "large enrolment fees and the burden of malocclusion surgery" (Translated from original statement in Korean: 큰 학비와 부정교합 수술비에 대한 부담으로 휴학하고 귀국하게 된다).[9]
Career
[edit]2013–2018: career beginnings
[edit]In 2012, Isaac took part in various music festivals and joint performances.
Isaac held his first solo concert at Pohang City Central Art Hall on 28–29 December 2012, called Isaac Hong and Friends.[10]
The Korean singer made his broadcast debut in 2013 by winning a bronze medal with his self-composed song "Spring" at the 24th Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest.[11] Following the competition, he participated in the production and execution of various original soundtracks.
Throughout 2013, Isaac continued to participate in various festivals and joint performances. On 31 May, 2013, Isaac held his second solo performance at Art Studio Tools, titled Between Spring and Summer.
In 2014, following his participation in the 24th Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest (Korean: 제24회 유재하 음악경연대회), Isaac featured on the album released in celebration of the contest and joined various concerts promoting the album. The release of this album marked Isaac's offical debut in the music industry, as his song was published under the label Music&New as part of the commemorative album.[12] Isaac also participated in writing, composing, and arranging the album's group song, "Things you can see when you stand one step behind."[13]
In 2015, Isaac released his first EP titled As Time Passes By. The EP is 24 minutes long and features 6 songs. The title song shares the EP's name: "As Time Passes By." The release of this EP marks Isaac's solo debut as a musician; it is his first musical work published under his name.[14]
In 2016, Isaac appeared on Mnet's show I Can See Your Voice season 2. He featured in the season's 12th episode, which aired on January 7, as a "good" singer.[15] He made an appearance during the Evidence round. A clip of Isaac's performance went viral on YouTube, amassing 3.2 million views and 28,000 likes. Following this viral clip, Isaac was nicknamed “Primitive Soul from the Jungle."[16]
Following his appearance on I Can See Your Voice, Isaac joined the Republic of Korea Armed Forces to fulfil his mandated service (January 25, 2016 - October 26, 2017) as an Army Sergeant.[17]
On April 1, 2018, Isaac started a YouTube channel called 차곡차곡 (English translation: Step by Step) where he broadcast himself writing and composing songs in real time.[18]
2019–2023: budding popularity, JTBC's Superband
[edit]On 2 February 2019, Isaac released the single ‘Campfire’.[19]
Isaac's presence on Superband
[edit]Beginning in April 2019, Isaac "garnered popularity after participating in JTBC's" first season of Superband (TV program).[20]
Episode 2: Isaac Hong first appearance on the show is in Episode 2, during the audition round. Isaac performed his original song (which he had first performed in 2013 at the Yoo Jae-Ha Music Contest) "봄아" (English Translation: "Spring"),[21] while singing and playing acoustic guitar. Isaac passed the first round of auditions.
Episode 3: Isaac was nominated by the show's judges as a team leader, and created the band Isaac Hong. He was accompanied by Jeong Sol, Lee Na-u (pianist) and Lee Ja-won. Isaac's team wrote, composed and performed an original song "내 기억 속의 소년"[22] (English translation: Childhood Memories, English Title: Proxy Rock), going against Kevin Oh's team who performed "Fireflies"[23] by Owl City. Isaac's team lost this round 1:4 (judge votes).[24]
Episode 6: Isaac joined Park Yeong-Jin's band, along with Kim Ha-Jin and Yang Ji-Won. Isaac's team performed Lorde's song "Royals".[25] They won against An Seung-Jin's team who performed an original composition "F=ma"[26] 3:2 (judge votes).[27]
Episode 9: Isaac once again joined Park Yeong-Jin's team (with Kim Ha-Jin and Yang Ji-Won). Their team performed Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes's song "The Time of My Life."[28] Their team won against Sin Hyeong-Bin's team who performed Hyun Jin-Young's "흐린 기억 속의 그대"[29] (English Translation: "You In The Vague Memory") at 4:1 (judge votes).[30]
Episode 10: Isaac joined Lee Nau's team along with Yang Ji-wan and Keven Oh. Their team performed an original composition named "너와 함께" (English Translation: "With You").[31] Their highest score was 90 and their lowest score was 78, with a total accumulated score of 423 their team placed 7th out of nine teams.[32]
Episode 12: In this round the show's final teams were established. Isaac joined a team with Zai.ro, Kim Woo-Sung, Benji and Hwang Min-Jae named Moné (Korean name: 모네). Moné performed an original composition called "가져가" (English Translation: "Take Me Away").[33] Their highest score was 980, their lowest score was 850, their total producer points were 4,610 and their total viewer points were 2,430, meaning they finished in 6th place out of six teams with a total of 7,040 points.[34]
Episode 13: In this round Moné once again performed an original composition, this time titled "우잉" (English Translation: "Wooing").[35] Their highest score was 970, their lowest score was 930, their total producer points were 4,740 and their total viewer points were 2,660, meaning they finished second out of six teams with 7,400 points.[36]
Episode 14: For the finals, Moné performed their third original compositor "idc (i don't care)."[37] They received 1,844 votes in the Online Pre-vote and 22,172 votes in the Text Message Voting. In the end, Moné finished the show in fourth place.[38]
Budding Popularity
[edit]Isaac Hong maintained a steady presence in the entertainment and music industry post-Superband. Isaac began to regurlarly appear on various radio shows as a guest. He also began to appear on Korean music broadcasting shows.
On 12 September 2019, Isaac released the single "You liked me in my dreams."[39]
On 28 September 2019, Isaac released the song "Ruin" under the Original Sound Track for the korean television show Strangers from Hell.[40]
Isaac made his first appearance on Dreaming Radio, a radio program broadcasted on MBC FM4U and hosted by the Korean music producer Park Kyung. He sang Kim Dong-Ryul's song "Departure." Throughout 2019, Isaac maintained a regular presence on the show appearing 11 times that year.
On 6 December 2019, Isaac released an EP titled The Important Little Things. The EP is 15 minutes long and is comprised of four songs.[41] On 31 December, Isaac did his first interview with Studio FLO, which was published on their YouTube channel.[42]
Throughout 2020, Isaac continued to appear on Dreaming Radio, making 18 appearances in total. His last appearance was 8 May 2020, where he performed the original song "내 기억 속의 소년" (English Translation: "Childhood Memories," English Title: Proxy Rock), which he had composed with his (at the time) team on Superband.
On 12 February, Isaac appeared as a guest in Lee Ji-Hyung's musical play The Home, which was held in Yeon-Hee Arts Theatre.[43]
Isaac's single, "Without You" was released on 5 May 2020.[44]
On 22 September 2020, Isaac Hong expanded his portfolio as he participated in the making and production of the musical film Da Capo (Korean title: 다시 만난 날들)[45] as both an actor and a music director.[46] Da Capo was the opening film of the 16th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival.[47] As part of this project, Isaac released his first album, titled Da Capo, on September 22, 2020. The album consists of 18 songs and has a total runtime of over 40 minutes.
On October 23, Isaac appeared on JTBC's show Hidden Singer 6, Episode 12 on the panel of celebrities.[48]
Isaac featured on the soundtrack of the Korean Television show The Uncanny Counter with the song "Close Your Eyes," which was released 6 December 2020.[49]
Isaac featured on the OST for Korean show, Lovestruck in the City. On 6 February 2021, he released the song "Kiss me Kiss me."[50]
On 4 September 2021, Isaac appeared on KBS' show Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend. Isaac appeared in Episode 521, singing Jeon In-kwon's song "Don't You Worry."[51]
Isaac completed narration and interviews for Hong Jin-kyung's show Hong Jin-kyung's glorious life as a devotee, with his first appearance being in Episode 10 (which was aired on 24 September 2021).[52] In the entirety of 2021, Isaac appeared on six of this show's episodes.
In the same year on 4 December, Isaac featured on Happiness's soundtrack with the song "Pain."[53][54] Just a few days later on 10 December, Isaac released three singles, ‘Heartfall’,[55] ‘Not so Bad’[56] and "Little Lights."[57]
On 29 January 2022, Isaac Hong released the song "Can't Run Away," which featured on the soundtrack of Through the Darkness (TV series).[58] Following this release on 5 April, Isaac released "Dive in" as part of the Korean show Military Prosecutor Doberman's OST.[59] On 14 May, Isaac featured on another OST for the Korean Drama My Liberation Notes with the song "I Think I Know."[60]
Throughout 2022, Isaac continued to complete narration and interviews on Hong Jin-kyung's glorious life as a devotee. In 2022, he featured in four episodes.[61]
On 4 March 2022 it was announced that Isaac signed an exclusive contract with the record/ entertainment company Achim Archive.[62]
From June 9 until November 8 2022, Isaac hosted the radio show Hong Isaac's Gleaning - How to become a lyricist (Native name: 홍이삭의 이삭줍기 - 작사가 되는법).[63] The show was broadcasted by EBS FM and has a total of 10 episodes.
On August 5, Isaac released the single ‘Since today’.[64]This was followed closely with a pair of singles grouped under the title 있을게 (English Translation: Stay)[65] named "Stay" and "Rain". Following this release, Isaac made his first appearances on popular Korean music broadcast shows, promoting his single ‘Stay’. For example, on August 24 he appeared on MBC's Show Champion, Episode. 446. He performed his song "Stay."[66] He also appeared on Mnet's M Countdown, Episode. 767 (aired 25 August) once again performing his single "Stay."[67]
Isaac once again appeared on KBS' show Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend on September 24, 2022. Isaac sung Haeeunlee's song "You Wouldn't Know."[68]
In November 2022, Isaac reunited with the Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest (which he placed bronze at in 2013) as the 33rd Contest's co-host alongside Choi Yu-ree (winner of the contest in 2018).[69]
On 29 January 2023, Isaac appeared on Episodes 388 and 389 of MBC's show, King of Mask Singer as ‘가왕 할 만두’ (English Translation: Possibly Masked King? Dumpling). In the first round, Isaac competed against ‘감동 그 잡채’ (English Translation: I am so touched (by the) Japchae) (who was revealed to be Mija) where the pair sang ‘난 여자가 있는데’ (English Title: I have a Girl) by Park Jin-young.[70] Isaac won the first round, receiving 79 votes vs Mija's 20. In the second round he performed ‘꿈에’ (English Translation: In Dream) by Lena Park[71] against 'Sister-In-Law With High Self-Esteem' (who was later revealed to be Moon Hee-Ok), who performed Sim Soo-bong's ‘비나리’ (English Translation: "Hymn of Dreams"). Isaac received 38 votes, losing to his opponent who received 61 votes.
Throughout 2023, Isaac continued with his narration and interviewing roll in various episodes of Hong Jin-kyung's glorious life as a devotee. In total, he participated in 13 episodes in 2023.[72]
Isaac's first release of 2023 was on the 11th of February. It was a song titled ‘Wind’, which featured on the OST of the Korean Drama, Kokdu: Season of Deity.[73]
Isaac returned to I Can See Your Voice as a guest panelist for season 10's 10th episode. He also appeared in Episode 1, performing a cover of BTS' song ‘Permission to Dance’ as the opening for Season 10 alongside various other past participants.[74]
Isaac was selected as a musician to take part of the CJ Cultural Foundation's program Tune-Up as part of the 22nd selection group. This program, which "aims to support rookie and indie musicians producing, recording and promoting their music", allowed Isaac to produce the EP everland alongside Jazz pianist Jin Soo-young.[75] On April 26, 2023, the EP was released after "six months of close-knit collaboration" with Jazz pianist Jin Soo-young.[76] The two musicians met through a mutual connection who suggested that they were musically compatible.[77] The EP is a 22 minute listen featuring six songs, which are mostly sung in English. A pre-release of the EP's title track ‘(N)everland’ came out as a Korean version on April 6, 2023, announcing the collaboration between Isaac and Soo-young.
On 6 June 2023, Isaac released the song ‘그 밤을 내게 줘요’ (English Translation: Give me that night) as part of the Korean Drama, My Perfect Stranger's OST.[78] On 28 August 2023, Isaac released another song for the OST of the Korean Drama, Perfect Shot (O'PENing) called 'Shoot At Me'.[79]
Isaac opened his second YouTube channel on 30 October 2023, named mm음[音]. The primary type of content he uploads are short documentaries of his life as a musician (which also cover behind the scenes work both him and his team complete).[80]
2023–Present: burst of fame, JTBC's Sing Again 3

[edit]From 26 October 2023 until 18 January 2024, Isaac Hong appeared on JTBC's third season of their show Sing Again as ‘Singer Number 58’, the "Eternal singer with no expiration date".[81]
Episode 3: During this episode, the audition round, Isaac performed Choi Yu-ree's song ‘Forest’. Isaac passed this round with all eight judges pressing the 'Again' button (to indicate that they wish to see Isaac perform once more).[82]
Episode 5: In this round Isaac paired with the Korean Indie singer Tejong to perform Korean Folk singerKang San-eh's song, ‘When I see You’. The pair competed against the duo consisting of Seo Yun-Hyuk and So Soo-Bin who performed Light & Salt's ‘Feeling of Alone’. Isaac and Tejong won the round 5:3 (judge 'Again' votes), meaning that both of the singer's passed to the next stage.[83]
Episode 6: As Isaac won the previous round, he was able to select his opponent from the other three contestants in his group (who had performed during the same round in the previous episode). Isaac choose SEO Yun-Hyuk as his competitor. He performed Yi Sung-Yol's song ‘Waiting’. Isaac won this round 5:3, meaning that he advanced to the next round.[84]
Episode 9: During this round, Isaac was put into a group with three other contestants (only first and second place could directly progress to the next round without a consolidation match). Isaac performed against Lee Bada, Im Yoon-Seong and Lim Jisoo. He performed NELL's song ‘Four Times Around the Sun’, getting first place after receiving 7 'Again' votes from the judges and subsequently passing to the next round.[85]
Episode 10: This episode was dubbed the 'Naming Ceremony' as the show's Top 10 contestants (who had made it to the semi-final) revealed their names and short versions of their songs. Isaac (who was previously dubbed Singer number 58) performed a short version of his song ‘Without You’. For the semi-final round, contestants were split into one-on-one matches. The contestants with the highest amount of 'Again' votes from the previous rounds were able to choose their opponents. So Soo-Bin chose Isaac.[86]
Episode 11: Isaac competed with Travel Skeches' song, ‘To My Old Friend’ against So Soo-Bin's performance of d.ear and Jaehyun's song ‘Try Again’. Isaac won the round 6:2, meaning he passed to the next round.[87]
Episode 12: During the first part of the final round, contestants were given a new song that had been produced for them. Isaac received the song, ‘I Love You’, which was produced by the Korean producer Kim Do-Hun. This first part of the final counted towards 30% of the final result. Isaac's highest individual judge score was 100 (received from Code Kunst), his lowest individual judge score was 94 (received from Kim Eana and Lee Hae-ri), his total score was 773, which meant he ranked 3rd out of seven contestants. This episode featured collaborative performances between Sing Again 3s finalists and Sing Again 2s finalists. Isaac performed Yoon Jong-Shin and Choi Jung-in's song ‘Uphill Road’ alongside Shin Hae-Sol, Park Hyun-Kyu and Shin You-Me.[88]
Episode 13: During the second part of the final round, contestants performed a cover of their choice. During the second part judges' scores accounted for 20% of the final score while voting via text message and app accounted for 40%. Isaac performed Cho Yong-Pil's song ‘Song of the Wind’. His highest individual judge score was 97 (received from Kim Eana), his lowest individual judge score was 92 (received from Baek Ji-young), his total judge score was 761, which ranked him sixth out of seven contestants.[89]
Final Results: The show's winner was announced at the end of Episode 13's broadcast, where they also received the grand prize of 300,000,000 KRW. Isaac got a score of 212.20 for Online early voting (first out of seven), 839.78 for Part 1 of the final (first out of seven), 282.85 for Part 2 of the final (sixth out of seven) and 1604.36 for the Real-Time voting score (first out of seven). Thus, Isaac finished with an accumulated score of 2939.19[90] (around 1000 points more than second place), placing him in first and making him the show's winner. Isaac also finished with the highest final score among the history of the show's winners (Sing Again 1: 2886.79, Lee Seung-Yoon, Sing Again 2: 2807.26, Kim Ki-Tae).
Rise in Fame
[edit]Isaac began 2024 with releasing a single, ‘Because There Is Love’ on 29 February. The song was produced by Choi Yu-ree who Isaac has interacted and worked with on multiple occasions.[91]
Following this release, Isaac featured on the soundtrack of the TV Show, Queen of Tears with the song ‘Fallin’, which came out on the 30 March of 2024. This song "further skyrocketed his fame" as the tv show, and in turn the soundtrack, gained massive popularity. Isaac Hong was invited as to perform at the 2024 KCON (music festival) held in Chiba, Japan over May the 10th to 12th.[92] He also performed at the KCON in Los Angeles, America, on July 26–28th.[93] These performances "on international stages...put his name on the map".[94]
On the 27 of September 2024, Isaac featured on the OST for season two of the Korean TV Show, Gyeongseong Creature with his song ‘GRADATION IN LIGHT’.[95]
